So to best answer if you can really boost your immune system, we should first aim to understand exactly how the immune system works and what it is.\n<h2><strong>What is the immune system?<\/strong><\/h2>\nFor many people, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5091071\/\">immune system<\/a> may be an abstract concept. We know it exists, but since it\u2019s not tangible (like a body part such as the heart), it can be difficult to conceptualize how it really works.\n\nThe US National Library of Medicine defines the immune system as a <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/immunesystemanddisorders.html#cat_59\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">complex network of cells, tissues, and organs<\/a>.\n\nWe see the immune system at work in many areas of the body, including:\n<ul>\n \t<li>skin: acts a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/skin-barrier\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">physical barrier<\/a> against germs<\/li>\n \t<li>mucus: another physical barrier that creates a moist lining for bodily cavities and organs to trap and fight invading substances<\/li>\n \t<li>white blood cells: attack invading substances and ward off ailments<\/li>\n \t<li>lymphatic system: home of various organs and tissues that produce, store, and transport white blood cells<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<img data-dominant-color=\"8d8a69\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #8d8a69;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-24464 size-full not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/How-does-the-immune-system-work-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition.jpg\" alt=\"Man blowing his nose outdoors to protect himself from pollen and other antigens, illustrating how the immune system works\" width=\"770\" height=\"514\">\n<h2>How the Immune System Works<\/h2>\nThe main purpose of the immune system is to protect and fight against threatening organisms, commonly known as antigens.\n\nThe body tightly regulates the immune system. At the end of the day, its job is to respond to an antigen and then\u2014emphasis on <em>then<\/em>\u2014create immunity to it. In most cases, it&#8217;s good at it too.\n\nWhen the immune system detects an antigen, it initiates a defense response to weaken and destroy the antigen by releasing antibodies. Antibodies are a group of proteins that help eliminate antigens and reduce the chance for future infection.\n\nAdditionally, the immune system doesn\u2019t approach all threats equally. In fact, there are two types of immunity\u2014innate and adaptive\u2014that react to antigens differently.\n<h3>1. Innate immunity<\/h3>\nInnate immunity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2832725\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">consists of anatomical barriers<\/a> like our skin and mucus to ward off unwanted invaders.\n\nAs our first line of defense, the innate immune system usually responds to antigen exposure within minutes to ward off foreign threats.\n\nEssentially, innate immunity is non-specific, meaning that it&#8217;ll respond with the same network of generic cells.\n<h3>2. Adaptive immunity<\/h3>\nWhile innate immunity helps <em>avoid<\/em> the likelihood of invaders from entering the body, adaptive immunity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK21070\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>fights<\/em> antigens<\/a> that have already made their way in. In fact, it creates a specialized response to attack, weaken, and destroy antigens.\n\nBecause its response is highly specific, the adaptive immune system can take hours and even days to respond.
