We Asked a GI Doctor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>If you&#8217;ve ever Googled &#8220;why do I poop so much on my period&#8221; or &#8220;are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/this-is-what-your-period-is-saying-about-your-health\/\">period<\/a> poops a thing,&#8221; you&#8217;re in the right place to find answers. Spoiler alert: You&#8217;re not alone.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ll never forget the time a friend voiced a sneaking suspicion I&#8217;d had for years: <em>Something funky happens when you poop on your period.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<p>As if the high maintenance of menstruation wasn&#8217;t enough\u2014not to mention other lingering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/butt-care-anal-health\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">butt care concerns<\/a>\u2014we both noticed undesired changes in our bowel movements (BMs) on a monthly basis. However, was this merely coincidental or unique to us&#8230; or are period poops a real thing?<\/p>\n\n\n<p>To get a definitive answer, I spoke to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.memorialcare.org\/providers\/ashkan-farhadi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ashkan Farhadi, MD, MS, FACP<\/a>, a board-certified gastroenterologist based in Fountain Valley, California.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-are-period-poops-a-thing\">Are period poops a thing?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>As it turns out, my friend and I were on the money. &#8220;Changes in bowel habits are fairly common during menstruation,&#8221; Dr. Farhadi confirms, &#8220;mainly due to fluctuations of hormone levels that change during menstruation.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Plus, the experience is actually quite common. In a 2014 study of 156 premenopausal participants, 73 percent of women (with no major history of GI, gynecologic, or psychiatric distress) experienced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3901893\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">at least one GI symptom before or during menses<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img data-dominant-color=\"a2978f\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #a2978f;\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Why-do-I-poop-so-much-on-my-period-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition.jpg\" alt=\"Woman on toilet experiencing painful period poops due to hormonal imbalance, stress, and digestive issues\" class=\"wp-image-23798 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-period-poops\">What are period poops?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Now that we know that period poops are real, what are they exactly? Dr. Farhadi states that period poops involve one or more GI symptoms in tandem with your cycle, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>diarrhea<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-to-relieve-constipation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">constipation<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>cramping<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>higher frequency of bowel movements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-causes-period-poops\">What causes period poops?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/vitamins-for-hormonal-imbalance\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">hormonal imbalances<\/a> are a major cause of period poops, a few other considerations may also play a factor.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hormonal-imbalances\">Hormonal Imbalances<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>As we saw above, the ebbs and *flows* of hormones <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/this-is-what-your-period-is-saying-about-your-health\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">during your cycle<\/a> are a root cause of uncomfortable period poops. In particular, Dr. Farhadi says fluctuations of the female hormones estrogen and progesterone affect gut motility and function, thus resulting in the phenomenon. High levels of one or the other hormone <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3823955\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">may cause constipation<\/a>, while dips in progesterone can lead to diarrhea and\/or more frequent BMs.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-existing-digestive-issues\">Existing Digestive Issues<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Dr. Farhadi stresses how common irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is. While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealth.gov\/a-z-topics\/irritable-bowel-syndrome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one in five people has IBS<\/a>, he notes that it affects women at a greater rate, and &#8220;those IBS symptoms could be aggravated or accentuated during the menstrual period.&#8221; However, this also rings true for those who may not suffer from IBS but still experience occasional GI discomfort\u2014whether that entails <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/best-foods-for-bloating\/\">bloating<\/a>, constipation, feelings of heaviness, and the like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img data-dominant-color=\"9a8666\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #9a8666;\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Why-do-I-poop-more-on-my-period-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition.jpg\" alt=\"Woman working at table stressed out, soon experiencing period poops and digestive issues\" class=\"wp-image-23810 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-stress\">Stress<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Stress is another potential trigger behind uncomfortable period poops. Exercise can influence gut function, Dr. Farhadi continues, and menstruation may throw a wrench into the equation.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-alleviate-period-poops\">How to alleviate period poops<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>While period poops can feel unpleasant, Dr. Farhidi reminds us that the experience is transient. After all, uncomfortable BMs should subside once menstruation ends.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>However, if they&#8217;re too harsh to handle, he suggests following the same gut-friendly diet and lifestyle tips he recommends for others with ongoing GI distress.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-be-good-to-your-gut\">1. Be Good to Your Gut<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>First and foremost, it&#8217;s always important to stick to a healthy, well-rounded diet.
