By speaking with our consumers, we realized there are many questions, misinformation, and even embarrassment concerning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/gut-health-and-immune-system\/\">gut health<\/a>.\n\n<img data-dominant-color=\"f1f1e9\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #f1f1e9;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2405 size-full not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/gut.jpg\" alt=\"Gut Health Awareness - Gut Brain Axis - The Wellnest by HUM Nutrition\" width=\"600\" height=\"200\">\n\nHowever, there seems to be a real &#8220;poo taboo&#8221; in our society. We&#8217;re afraid to embrace our bowels and speak directly about digestive health. We&#8217;re puzzled about what it means to be regular and what to do about constipation or diarrhea. An article in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4367209\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Annals of Gastroenterology<\/a> describes it as &#8220;bidirectional communication&#8230; linking emotional and cognitive centers of the brain with peripheral intestinal functions.&#8221;\n\nThe bacteria in your gastrointestinal tract signals the brain, and vice versa, through various links (neural, endocrine, immune, and humoral). Current research tackles microbiota&#8217;s role on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/06\/28\/magazine\/can-the-bacteria-in-your-gut-explain-your-mood.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mood<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2015\/01\/04\/gut-bacteria-mental-healt_n_6391014.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">anxiety<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/trends\/endocrinology-metabolism\/fulltext\/S1043-2760(14)00201-X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bone mass<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2015\/01\/joint-pain-from-the-gut\/383772\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">joint pain<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/anti-inflammatory-lifestyle\/\">inflammation<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/beauty\/the-skin-gut-connection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">skin concerns<\/a>.\n\nRegarding mood change and depression, nearly 70% of people with the gastrointestinal disorder IBS also have depression. Additionally, celiac disease correlates highly with major depression. Further research is needed to see which is the cause versus effect of gut flora and the illness. However, it has real potential to change how we treat and understand diseases.\n<h3>Impact of&nbsp;probiotics<\/h3>\nStudies have been promising when looking at how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/product\/6\/gut-instinct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">high-quality probiotics<\/a> are introduced into the gut to restore normal intestinal flora. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/scott-mendelson-md\/personal-health_b_4533877.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">One study<\/a> found that when supplemental <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/the-guide-to-choosing-the-best-probiotic-for-you\/\">probiotics<\/a> were included into a group&#8217;s diet for one month, mood improved and levels of stress hormones were reduced. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2015\/06\/gut-bacteria-on-the-brain\/395918\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Another study<\/a> at UCLA found a group of healthy women who consumed yogurt\u2014a probiotic with the strains bifidobacterium, streptococcus, lactococcus, and lactobacillus\u2014showed a significant difference in reacting more calmly to images of facial expressions than a control group.
