Guided by the practice of mindful eating, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/author\/gaby-vaca-flores\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gaby Vaca-Flores, RDN, CLE<\/a>, shares her standard nutritionist food diary.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>My healthy eating philosophy can be summed up in three words: easy, balanced, and flexible.<\/p>\n<h2>Why I Practice Mindful Eating<\/h2>\n<p>Over the years, I\u2019ve actively worked to disconnect myself from mainstream diet culture that promotes strict eating rules. A big part of my disconnecting process was getting in tune with my hunger and fullness cues, my taste and food preferences, and my behavior around food choices.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I use my eating philosophy to drive all of my food choices\u2014and I feel great! I&#8217;m able to continue reaching new milestones in my health and fitness goals, without having to ever fear foods I love or feel that I\u2019m restricting myself.<\/p>\n<p>Many people refer to this dietary approach as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/what-is-mindful-eating\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mindful eating<\/a>. The amazing thing about eating mindfully is that regardless of your food restrictions, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/whole-foods-plant-based-diet-results\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">diet preferences<\/a>, or goals, the same principles can always apply.<\/p>\n<p><img data-dominant-color=\"a39a8f\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #a39a8f;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23231 aligncenter not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Gaby-Vaca-Flores-RD-What-a-Dietitian-Eats-in-a-Day-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition.jpg\" alt=\"Gaby Vaca-Flores, RD, in the kitchen to set up her nutritionist food diary for mindful eating\" width=\"770\" height=\"578\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>What a Dietitian Eats in a Day<\/h2>\n<p>To see my version of easy, balanced, and flexible meals, keep reading!<\/p>\n<h3>Pre-Breakfast<\/h3>\n<p>Before eating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/low-fodmap-breakfast-recipes\/\">breakfast<\/a>, I make a point to drink at least half of my 32-ounce water bottle.<\/p>\n<p>Despite popular myths, there&#8217;s no concrete benefit to drinking water first thing in the morning. I simply enjoy doing it because when my mornings get busy (which are most mornings), I often forget to drink enough water. So by drinking first thing, I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-is-it-important-to-stay-hydrated\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">kickstart my water intake<\/a> for the day.<\/p>\n<p>This is also when I take my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/probiotic-for-skin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">daily pre- and probiotics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img data-dominant-color=\"a66e7b\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #a66e7b;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23206 aligncenter not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Woman-Filling-Water-Bottle-Hydrate-to-Start-the-Day-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition.jpg\" alt=\"Woman's hand filling water bottle at the sink to start her day by hydrating and taking vitamins\" width=\"770\" height=\"514\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Breakfast<\/h3>\n<p>As a self-proclaimed breakfast enthusiast, I eagerly look forward to my first meal of the day. Not only does it <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/16373948\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">satisfy my morning hunger<\/a>, but it tends to set the tone for the food decisions I\u2019ll make later in the day.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, if my breakfast is lacking in complex carbs, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-do-we-need-protein\/\">protein<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/benefits-of-soluble-fiber-vs-insoluble-fiber\/\">fiber<\/a>, I know that I\u2019ll have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-blood-sugar-affects-food-cravings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">spike in cravings<\/a> later on. This doesn\u2019t mean that I&#8217;ll make a full breakfast spread (I save that for the weekends), but I do make sure that my breakfast is balanced.<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, my go-to breakfast meal is a good ol\u2019 breakfast burrito. To build my burrito, I reach for a high-fiber (five to 15 grams) tortilla to ensure that I\u2019m getting long-burning energy to fuel the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/types-of-rest\/\">rest<\/a> of my day. I add protein by scrambling two eggs and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/air-fryer-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">air frying<\/a> two or three strips of turkey bacon. Finally, I complete my burrito by adding a slice of avocado and homemade salsa.<\/p>\n<p>When I\u2019m not in a tortilla mood, I simply pair the eggs, turkey bacon, and avocado with a side of sweet potatoes or a slice of sourdough to complete my meal.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and I never forget my tall glass of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/types-of-tea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">iced green tea<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>See? Easy, balanced, and flexible!<\/p>\n<p><img data-dominant-color=\"a58983\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #a58983;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-23205 size-full not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Yogurt-Bowl-What-a-Dietitian-Eats-in-a-Day-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition.jpg\" alt=\"Woman holding a Greek yogurt bowl topped with seeds for a healthy, high-protein lunch\" width=\"770\" height=\"514\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Lunch<\/h3>\n<p>Because my mornings are typically the busiest part of my day and my breakfast burrito is so filling, I easily feel full until lunchtime.<\/p>\n<p>Frankly, the last thing I want to do is spend most of my lunch break preparing food. That&#8217;s why I always opt for easy-assembly meals for lunch.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, my go-to lunch has been a yogurt bowl. My yogurt bowl looks different every day, which is great because it adds variety and keeps me from getting bored of the same meal.<\/p>\n<p>The base however, is always Greek yogurt with high protein content. I aim to use a yogurt that packs a minimum of 10 grams of protein per serving so I can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/satiating-diet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stay fuller longer<\/a>, as well as support my muscles, bones, and metabolism.<\/p>\n<p>I top my yogurt bowl with all kinds of good-for-you ingredients. Some of my favorites include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>homemade granola: adds whole grains and texture<\/li>\n<li>raw cacao nibs: packs antioxidants + adds a bittersweet flavor<\/li>\n<li>blueberries: sweetens + adds color; they&#8217;re also rich in antioxidants and skin-loving nutrients!<\/li>\n<li>seeds (hemp, flax, chia): adds omega-3 fatty acids, protein, and texture<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This bowl takes less than five minutes to put together, leaving me plenty of time to enjoy it and rest before heading back to my to-do list.<\/p>\n<h3>Snacks<\/h3>\n<p>When I take the time to prepare balanced meals, I find myself feeling less hungry between lunch and dinner.<\/p>\n<p>Still, for this dietitian, healthy snacks are another staple of what I eat in a day. If I need an energy boost or simply feel hungry, I&#8217;ll reach for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>chopped cucumber with lemon + salt<\/li>\n<li>broccoli or carrots (roasted and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/meal-prep-for-beginners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">meal-prepped in advance<\/a>) with ranch dressing<\/li>\n<li>string cheese + wheat crackers<\/li>\n<li>seasonal fruit bowl<\/li>\n<li>protein bar<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img data-dominant-color=\"a68e7c\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #a68e7c;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23207 aligncenter not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Protein-Shake-What-a-Dietitian-Eats-in-a-Day-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition.jpg\" alt=\"Closeup of female dietitian blending protein shake on workout day\" width=\"770\" height=\"490\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Post-Workout<\/h3>\n<p>If I\u2019m working out before dinner, I almost always prepare a protein shake.<\/p>\n<p>Protein shakes are the perfect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/what-to-eat-before-a-workout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">post-workout recovery meal<\/a> because protein helps your muscles repair, build, and maintain their mass.<\/p>\n<p>To keep things easy, balanced, and flexible, I toss in many of the same ingredients from my yogurt bowl into my blender, add protein powder and almond milk, and voila!<\/p>\n<h3>Dinner<\/h3>\n<p>I like to make up for the greens that are lacking in my breakfast and lunch during dinner.<\/p>\n<p>On most nights, I make a one-pan meal. I roast a colorful assortment of vegetables, my protein of choice, and serve it with a side of rice or potatoes.<\/p>\n<p>Lately, my go-to assortment has been roasted chicken, broccoli, carrots, tomatoes, and zucchini, all served with a side of brown or white rice. I also make sure to use a variety of seasonings to enhance the flavor.<\/p>\n<p>Once served, my plate typically consists of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>50 percent veggies<\/li>\n<li>25 percent protein<\/li>\n<li>20 percent carbohydrates<\/li>\n<li>5 percent fat<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img data-dominant-color=\"a18064\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #a18064;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23203 aligncenter not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Nutritionist-Food-Diary-Dessert-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition.jpg\" alt=\"Chocolate peanut butter cups stacked up for dessert\" width=\"770\" height=\"514\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Dessert<\/h3>\n<p>In my kitchen, there&#8217;s always room for dessert!<\/p>\n<p>Whether it&#8217;s freshly baked or store-bought goodies, I respect my sweet tooth by treating myself to a post-dinner treat. Not only does this empower me to feel freedom in my food choices, but it simply makes me happy.<\/p>\n<p>My go-to sweet treats include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a slice of whole wheat toast topped with a chocolate hazelnut spread<\/li>\n<li>a handful of honey-roasted almonds<\/li>\n<li>a chocolate peanut butter cup (or two)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The Bottom Line<\/h2>\n<p>As you can see, I use my own mindful eating eating philosophy (easy, balanced, flexible) to guide all of my food choices throughout the day. I keep my kitchen stocked and ready to go with basics so that I can easily create balanced meals with flexible ingredients.<\/p>\n<p>The result?
