While these are very real reactions to repeatedly handling stressful situations, some stress isn\u2019t as negative as you might think. That\u2019s where positive stress comes in.\r\n\r\nWith the help of Clarity Health Solutions psychotherapist <a href=\"https:\/\/clarityhealthfl.com\/portfolio-items\/sharron-frederick-lcsw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sharron Frederick, LCSW<\/a>, we&#8217;ll learn to distinguish positive stress from negative stress\u2014and how to manage both for your mental well-being.\r\n<h2>What is positive stress?<\/h2>\r\nAlso known as eustress, positive stress involves one&#8217;s perception that a stressor is within their capabilities. As a result, instead of overwhelming them, the stressor increases motivation, focus, and positive thoughts.\r\n\r\nOn account of these responses, Sharron says that this type of good stress forces us outside of our comfort zone and ultimately increases inner growth. \u201cEustress makes us feel accomplished, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/queen-of-confidence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">confident<\/a>, and excited,\u201d she explains.\r\n\r\nShe then lists examples of positive stress, which include:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">going off to college<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">moving homes<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">getting promoted or starting a new job<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li>getting married<\/li>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">having a baby<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">retiring<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">traveling<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">starting <\/span>a new exercise regimen<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Of course, these aren\u2019t the only times in which good stress exists. Other positive forms of stress include when a deadline approaches but you work well under pressure, or when a race is coming up but you know you&#8217;re ready.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<img data-dominant-color=\"ad8c7c\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #ad8c7c;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22848 aligncenter not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/What-Is-Positive-Stress-Good-Stress-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition.jpg\" alt=\"Man on racetrack healthily handling the challenge of positive stress\" width=\"770\" height=\"514\" \/>\r\n<h2>What Makes Stress Positive or Negative?<\/h2>\r\nStress falls into two categories:\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li>eustress (positive stress)<\/li>\r\n \t<li>distress (negative stress)<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n\u201cThe difference between the two is when we experience distress, we perceive the stressor as a threat outside of our capabilities,\u201d Sharron explains.\r\n\r\nWhere eustress is often short-term and directly related to an upcoming task or life event, distress is typically longer-term, leading to ongoing feelings of anxiousness, appetite and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/mighty-night\/\">sleep<\/a> disturbances, and mental and physical issues as a whole.\r\n\r\nTo name only a few, examples of distress can involve negative emotions surrounding:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>losing your job<\/li>\r\n \t<li>divorce<\/li>\r\n \t<li>personal or family illness<\/li>\r\n \t<li>legal issues<\/li>\r\n \t<li>financial issues<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nMost notably, whereas distress causes a person to break down over time, eustress pushes them to reach new levels.\r\n\r\nIn the latter case, \u201cpeople experience increased energy, confidence, resilience, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/importance-of-alone-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">autonomy<\/a>, and growth,\u201d Sharron explains. \u201cIt provides a sense of well-being and increased self-esteem,\u201d as well as pride and achievement.\r\n\r\n<img data-dominant-color=\"bbb3ad\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #bbb3ad;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22851 aligncenter not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Examples-of-Positive-Stress-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition.jpg\" alt=\"Father working from home with two sons, trying to get things done but rising to the challenge of good stress\" width=\"770\" height=\"514\" \/>\r\n<h2>How to Cultivate Positive Stress<\/h2>\r\nWhile feelings of distress will occur from time to time, tailoring your mindset and setting boundaries can help reduce their likelihood.\r\n\r\nRemember: Distress is a threat, whereas eustress is a challenge.\r\n<h3>Reframe Your Mindset<\/h3>\r\nManifesting a mindset that&#8217;s capable of rising to every challenge can help cultivate eustress and avoid distress.\r\n\r\nAs an example, Sharron says that if a person can reframe job loss to a job hunt, then the process transforms from a threat to a challenge. From there, &#8220;the person feels motivated and energized to find that new position,&#8221; she explains.\r\n<h3>Know Your Limits<\/h3>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Other ways to avoid distress include understanding your limits\u2014whether they be, emotional, financial, or time-related.<\/span>\r\n\r\n\u201cDon\u2019t over-schedule yourself, make realistic goals, have healthy sleeping and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/healthy-eating-nutrition-habits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">eating habits<\/a>, exercise, surround yourself with positive people, balance work and home life, avoid drugs and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/long-term-effects-of-alcohol\/\">alcohol<\/a>, develop self-awareness, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/jen-sincero-how-to-form-badass-habits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">have positive boundaries<\/a>, be creative,\u201d Sharron urges.\r\n\r\nDoing all of these things will help you feel more fulfilled in life and less stressed out by it. And\u2014if you still need a bit of a mind shift\u2014committing to daily gratitude can help you even further.\r\n<h2>A Final Caveat<\/h2>\r\nIt&#8217;s important to note that while recognizing the difference between positive and negative stress can influence the way our mind embraces challenges, our bodies have a harder time distinguishing between the two.\r\n\r\nEven positive stress can still leave us vulnerable to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/4-ways-stress-affects-beauty-skin-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">physical side effects of stress<\/a> such as breakouts, impaired sleep, and poor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-digestion-works\/\">digestion<\/a>.
