By placing the needs of others\u2014especially our <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">children or grandchildren\u2014above our own, we could better safeguard our genetic legacy. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _1iXso wj-V5 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Nevertheless, the selfish gene theory left many unanswered questions. For instance, why do we care about or give to others who aren&#8217;t genetically related to us? If all of our actions are motivated by keeping our genes alive, we shouldn&#8217;t care for those outside of our families.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"kaqlz _1FQ9t blog-post-page-font zJfAe\">\r\n<p class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _1iXso wj-V5 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">To answer this question, supporters of the selfish gene theory suggested that caring for others unrelated to us is a<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"> type of <a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/1981-32767-001\">insurance policy<\/a>. This perhaps explains why the selfish gene theory doesn&#8217;t account for acts of kindness to strangers or others not in our pack.\r\n\r\nYet again, supporters of this theory argued that altruistic acts increases our status amongst our peers.
