What\u2019s more, the position in which you sleep can say more about not only your quality of sleep, but also your personality as a whole.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>To discover what different sleeping positions mean, we chatted with Tara Youngblood\u2014chief scientist and co-founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chilitechnology.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ChiliSleep<\/a>\u2014who&#8217;s logged 10,000+ hours studying the science of sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Keep reading to learn about what your sleeping position says about you.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-your-sleeping-position-says-about-you\">What Your Sleeping Position Says About You<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Curious about what various sleeping positions mean? Here&#8217;s what sleep position psychology has to say about five common types of sleeping styles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img data-dominant-color=\"a3948a\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #a3948a;\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Sleep-Position-Psychology-Fetal-Position-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition.jpg\" alt=\"Woman sleeping in fetal position, which may indicate neuroticism according to sleep position psychology\" class=\"wp-image-21815 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-sleeping-in-the-fetal-position\">1. Sleeping in The Fetal Position<\/h3>\n\n\n<p><strong>What it looks like:<\/strong> Sleeping on your side with your arms and legs curled in<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>What it says about you:<\/strong> \u201cIf you use the fetal position while you sleep, you may be in the neuroticism category, which describes a tendency to have unsettling thoughts and feelings,\u201d Tara shares.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>Other considerations:<\/strong> That said, don\u2019t worry if you sleep like this! This is the most popular sleep position of all. According to a <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/health\/3112170.stm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">survey<\/a> by sleep specialist and author Chris Idzikowski, 41 percent of sleepers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/types-of-rest\/\">rest<\/a> in this sleep position. \u201cIt makes sense, since we all did this once in the womb,\u201d Tara continues.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Also, while Tara characterizes it as neuroticism, Iszikowski elaborates in his survey that it\u2019s more about being sensitive\u2014which can lead to certain stress, worries, and fears\u2014than truly unhinged.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless, given the potential personality tendencies of these sleepers, Tara suggests adding a weighted blanket to your sleep routine. (Personally, I recommend the Velvet Napper from <a href=\"https:\/\/bearaby.com\/products\/velvet-napper?variant=30334323425369\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bearaby<\/a>.) \u201cIt&#8217;ll help reduce anxiety before you go to bed,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-sleeping-on-your-back-the-soldier\">2. Sleeping on Your Back (The Soldier)<\/h3>\n\n\n<p><strong>What it looks like:<\/strong> Sleeping on your back with your arms straight down at your side as if you\u2019re laying at attention<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>What it says about you:<\/strong> \u201cSoldier sleepers live up to their name,\u201d Tara says. \u201cThey&#8217;re strong, silent, and focused people who don\u2019t like a big fuss.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>Other considerations:<\/strong> Most often, soldier sleepers are a combination of conscientious, open, and extroverted. \u201cWeighting of these personality types may influence how much time the sleeper spends in this position,\u201d she adds, noting that sleeping on your back is considered the healthiest. \u201cRegardless, they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/productivity-tips\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">love structure<\/a> and take themselves very seriously. This also means that they can have high expectations for themselves and others around them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>However, Tara says that sleeping in this position can lead to snoring. \u201cSoldier sleepers may have to prop themselves up to sleep or spend sleeping time apart from their sleep partner as a result,\u201d she says. Additionally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-you-should-sleep-with-your-mouth-closed\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">sleeping with your mouth closed<\/a> can help reduce snoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img data-dominant-color=\"b9b1a0\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #b9b1a0;\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Side-Sleeper-What-Does-Your-Sleeping-Position-Say-About-You-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition.jpg\" alt=\"Back view of woman sleeping on her side\" class=\"wp-image-21816 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-the-side-sleeper\">3. The Side Sleeper<\/h3>\n\n\n<p><strong>What it looks like:<\/strong> Sleeping on your side with arms outstretched or curled up<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>What it says about you:<\/strong> \u201cSide sleepers are typically open, agreeable, and extroverted people,\u201d Tara explains. \u201cThey converse with all kinds of people, but can prefer running with an A-list crowd.\u201d Further, if you side sleep with your arms outstretched or cuddled up with a pillow, she says there\u2019s a fun-seeker in you.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>Other considerations:<\/strong> This position keeps your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/ergonomist-work-from-home-tips\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">neck and back in alignment<\/a>, which Tara says is ideal for folks with pain in those areas.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-the-sleep-artist-aka-the-starfish\">4. The Sleep Artist (aka The Starfish)<\/h3>\n\n\n<p><strong>What it looks like:<\/strong> Sleeping on your back with your legs stretched out and arms stretched up over your head<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>What it says about you:<\/strong> \u201cPeople who sleep like this may have an unconventional style, but are very loyal friends and make relationships a great priority,\u201d Tara says. \u201cThey&#8217;re open, agreeable leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>Other considerations:<\/strong> While Tara says that this is the least popular sleep style, that doesn\u2019t phase these unique souls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img data-dominant-color=\"bdb2a4\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #bdb2a4;\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Stomach-Sleeper-What-do-sleeping-positions-mean-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition.jpg\" alt=\"Man sleeping on his stomach to illustrate Different types of sleeping positions and their meanings\" class=\"wp-image-21819 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-the-stomach-sleeper-aka-the-freefaller\">5. The Stomach Sleeper (aka The Freefaller)<\/h3>\n\n\n<p><strong>What it looks like:<\/strong> Sleeping on your stomach with your head to one side and arms wrapped around a pillow<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>What it says about you:<\/strong> The stomach sleeper \u201cis an experimental fun seeker and risk taker,\u201d Tara says. However, \u201cthey can have underlying feelings of neuroticism and vulnerability.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>Other considerations:<\/strong> Doctors have found that sleeping on your stomach can be bad for your back. However this sleeping position is better to reduce snoring, so it\u2019s still up for grabs in that regard.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-final-thoughts\">Final Thoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>As fascinating as sleep position psychology is, it&#8217;s important to remember that\u2014like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/tag\/horoscopes\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">in astrology<\/a>\u2014these common characteristics should lead you to further self-discovery. Conversely, they shouldn&#8217;t pigeonhole you into thinking that these sleeping styles are the be-all, end-all of who you are. Some people may even sleep in multiple positions from night to night or even throughout the night.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>In sum, take your own sleep position psychology with a grain of salt.
