While people are often embarrassed to discuss this topic, many want to better understand why we fart, if farting is healthy, and ultimately, how to fart less.\n\nKeep reading for answers.\n<h2>Why do we fart?<\/h2>\nWe all experience farts, which occur as a result of digesting food. Intestinal gas is released and builds up in our bodies, with some of it absorbed by the body.\n\nHowever, when excess gas gathers in the upper part of the colon, it puts pressure on the colon wall. Farting, aka flatulence, allows for a painless escape of this excess gas.\n\nThere are several common culprits behind why we fart, including:\n<ul>\n \t<li><strong>Swallowed air:<\/strong> We often take in excess air <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-many-times-are-you-supposed-to-chew-your-food\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">as we chew<\/a> or drink carbonated beverages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n \t<li><strong>Undigested carbohydrates:<\/strong> Sometimes all your food doesn\u2019t get fully digested by the enzymes in the small intestine. Most of the time, the foods we eat and\/or an unbalanced diet are associated with smelly farts as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/causes-of-body-odor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">body odor<\/a>.\n\nIronically, the healthier you eat, the worse your farts tend to smell. In particular, while fiber-rich foods (including fruits and vegetables) boost gut bacteria, they also cause you to pass more gas.\n\nHere&#8217;s a closer look at three main factors that influence how much our farts smell.\n<h3>1. High-Fiber Foods<\/h3>\nFiber-rich foods are healthy for you, but they can make you pass more gas. That&#8217;s because it takes longer for these foods to break down in your digestive system, so they ferment over time.\n\nAdditionally, high-fiber foods are sometimes smelly themselves, which means your farts may be more pungent, too. This is especially true with strong-smelling vegetables, such as:\n<ul>\n \t<li>broccoli<\/li>\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-does-my-pee-smell-bad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">asparagus<\/a><\/li>\n \t<li>Brussels sprouts<\/li>\n \t<li>cabbage<\/li>\n \t<li>cauliflower<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nFurther, have you ever wondered why your farts smell like rotten eggs? You can attribute this specific odor to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhsinform.scot\/illnesses-and-conditions\/stomach-liver-and-gastrointestinal-tract\/flatulence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sulfur in fiber-rich foods<\/a>. In addition to the veggies above, foods high in sulfur include red meat, milk, and plant-based proteins.\n\nAdditionally, w<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">hen we feed the bacteria in the gut with high-protein foods, they also result in unpleasant-smelling gas\u2014called hydrogen sulfide\u2014which comes from the bacteria breaking down your food.<\/span>\n<h3>2. Bacterial Buildup in the Digestive Tract<\/h3>\nWhen we digest food, nutrients are extracted and sent to our bloodstream, then waste is sent to the colon. If the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-digestion-works\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">digestion process<\/a> is disrupted, there can be an overgrowth of waste, thus causing buildup and consequent issues.\n\nThis process may cause a higher volume of foul-smelling gas. Studies show that people with digestive tract imbalances <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1774596\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">often have diarrhea and abdominal pain<\/a>. If you suspect this issue, consult your doctor.\n\nOtherwise, farts can also smell due to constipation. If you can\u2019t go to the bathroom regularly, bacteria and odor develop, resulting in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-do-my-farts-smell-so-bad\/\">smelly gas<\/a>. For example, people with lactose intolerance can\u2019t break down the carbohydrate lactose. People with this condition experience intestinal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/anti-inflammatory-lifestyle\/\">inflammation<\/a> if they consume gluten, which can result in both malabsorption and flatulence.\n\n<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">If you suspect you have a food sensitivity, intolerance, or allergy, talk to your doctor, who can help determine if tests are necessary.<\/span>\n<h2>Is farting healthy?<\/h2>\nFarting is both normal and healthy, so long as it&#8217;s without discomfort and within a standard range.\n\nAccording to one study, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5350578\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">14 to 25 farts per day<\/a> are considered normal. Yet remember: A healthy person might notice that they fart more frequently when they eat foods that are more difficult to digest, such as the ones mentioned above.\n\nAgain, more often than not, passing gas\u2014whether foul or odorless\u2014shouldn&#8217;t be concerning. That said, here are five parting tips on how to reduce farting and help make your farts less smelly.\n\n<strong>1. Drink more water.<\/strong> This will help move waste through your body at a quicker pace.\n\n<strong>2. Try to avoid the foods that contribute to smelly gas.<\/strong> This is easier said than done, but if you know your foods that trigger smelly gas, aim to eat less of them.\n\n<strong>3. Eat smaller portions.<\/strong> Be sure to fully chew and swallow each bite of food to encourage healthy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-digestion-works\/\">digestion<\/a> and reduce gas production.\n\n<strong>4.
