Someone&#8217;s always telling us the best way to become fit and healthy, as though the only true answer to total health is from a certain regimen. However, our lives and bodies are all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/bio-individuality\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">shaped by unique, cumulative circumstances<\/a> and experiences. So how can any one method be trusted to offer success for all?<\/p>\r\n<p>When it comes to exercise, the overall consensus is that the typical American needs more of it. But how about those who already incorporate movement into their daily lives? Also, how much is enough, and how much is too much?<\/p>\r\n<p>Here, a couple of fitness experts weigh in on the topic\u2014no pun intended.<\/p>\r\n<p><img data-dominant-color=\"948980\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #948980;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-21544 aligncenter not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/How-Often-Should-You-Work-Out-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition.jpg\" alt=\"Group spinning class to illustrate cardio exercise concept for weight loss\" width=\"770\" height=\"513\"><\/p>\r\n<h2>How often should you exercise?<\/h2>\r\n<p>\u201cA few factors come into play when deciding how often someone should work out and which forms of exercise are ideal for a person,&#8221; begins <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/highcarbjazzy\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jasmine Al-Masri<\/a>, the lead instructor at <a href=\"https:\/\/motivatestudios.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Motivate Studios<\/a> in Los Angeles.<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;For general physical and mental health, a good rule is to move at least 30 minutes per day, most days per week,\u201d she shares.<\/p>\r\n<p>Of course, this quota is flexible. It&#8217;s also based on a number of individual factors, including your fitness goals, body type, and much more. That said, keep reading for more intel on creating the best fitness routine for you.<\/p>\r\n<h2>What&#8217;s the Best Type of Exercise to Lose Weight?<\/h2>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.givestrengthwellness.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stephanie Jameson, CPT<\/a>, a trainer and co-founder of giveStrength in Los Angeles, has a methodical approach to this question.<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-much-weight-can-you-lose-in-a-month\/\">weight loss<\/a> and maintenance, a combo of resistance training (body weight or with equipment) and cardio (anything that elevates your heart rate and gets you sweaty) will help you meet your goal,&#8221; Stephanie begins.<\/p>\r\n<p><img data-dominant-color=\"a6a6a4\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #a6a6a4;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-21546 aligncenter not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/How-Often-to-Exercise-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition.jpg\" alt=\"Man jumping rope outdoors to get in cardio to lose weight\" width=\"770\" height=\"513\"><\/p>\r\n<h2>Why You Should Mix Up Your Workouts<\/h2>\r\n<p>Both trainers agree that no matter your goal, you should switch things up.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cLight yoga, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/benefits-of-walking-daily\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">walking<\/a>, playing with your kids, and of course other forms of exercise like cycling, kickboxing, dancing, Pilates, weight lifting\u2014whatever activity you truly feel good and enjoy doing\u2014[are all] perfect,&#8221; Jasmine shares.<\/p>\r\n<p>Similarly, Stephanie recommends low-impact training for everyone. &#8220;I encourage all clients to incorporate yoga or Pilates at least once per week to keep their body flexible and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/what-is-functional-fitness\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">functional<\/a>,&#8221; she shares. These types of workouts can also &#8220;help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-to-warm-up-before-a-workout\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">avoid injuries<\/a> that could get in the way of their fitness goals.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n<p>Next, Jasmine mentions that since everyone is different, you should take time to experiment with types of workouts. And by experimentation, Jasmine doesn\u2019t mean you should go for the gold immediately. Over-exertion can happen to anyone, at any stage of fitness, so always start slowly.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cSee how you feel when you do mostly cardio versus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/health-benefits-of-strength-training\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">strength training<\/a>,&#8221; she suggests, &#8220;and check in with how your body, mood, and internal systems respond to it.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>This brings us back to Jasmine&#8217;s original point about movement: Find whatever it is that gets you moving, and aim to maintain it for at least 30 minutes on a consistent basis.<\/p>\r\n<h2>can you exercise too much?<\/h2>\r\n<p>This exercise-frequency question is near and dear to Jasmine, as she\u2019s struggled in the past with overdoing it.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cI learned my lesson the hard way with injuries and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/this-is-what-your-period-is-saying-about-your-health\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">missing periods<\/a> due to over-exercising and under-fueling, so I can\u2019t stress what I\u2019m about to say enough. Any body movement is movement, and it\u2019s sufficient,&#8221; she emphasizes.<\/p>\r\n<p>That\u2019s right. Jasmine&#8217;s energy levels and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/30-day-lagree-challenge\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">Pilates bod<\/a> may lead some to assume she runs half-marathons twice a week. But the reality behind her success is finding her own happy middle ground and listening to her body\u2019s needs.<\/p>\r\n<p><img data-dominant-color=\"867663\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #867663;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-21545 aligncenter not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Why-You-Should-Mix-Up-Your-Workouts-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition.jpg\" alt=\"Overhead shot of woman stretching on yoga mat; yoga and Pilates low-impact training concept\" width=\"770\" height=\"458\"><\/p>\r\n<h2>ABOVE ALL, Find Balance<\/h2>\r\n<p>One thing Jasmine wants us to remember is that balance is essential. We all have different goals and responses to exercise, but it\u2019s important to vary intensity rather than go all out, every time.<\/p>\r\n<p>For instance, she doesn&#8217;t recommend doing HIIT (high-intensity interval training) every day. \u201cIf you like HIIT, then great! But throw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/types-of-yoga\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">some yoga<\/a> or mat Pilates in there on other days, as well,&#8221; she recommends.<\/p>\r\n<p>There&#8217;s no one-shoe-fits-all for workouts, so trial and error are part of the process. &#8220;However, balance and variety is definitely a rule I can say, with confidence, that every body responds well to,&#8221; she continues.<\/p>\r\n<p>Then, she also has strong thoughts about allowing your body to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/types-of-rest\/\">rest<\/a> and recover. &#8220;Take two to three days off. (Seriously, do it.) Regardless of how easy exercise is for you, [if you] take these days of <em>total<\/em> rest, you&#8217;ll see, feel, and think more results.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<h2>The Bottom Line<\/h2>\r\n<p>All said, Stephanie says that consistency is key for any workout regimen you choose. &#8220;At the end of the day, the very best form of exercise is the one that you enjoy and will stick with,\u201d she concludes.<\/p>\r\n<p>And while a good sweat is certainly healthy, we don\u2019t need to feel like we\u2019ve failed ourselves if we don\u2019t get exhausted from daily exertion. In fact, that\u2019s not ideal.<\/p>\r\n<p>So strike your balance, be sure to rest, and move in a way that makes you happy, not resentful.
