In fact, when our usual unwinding methods\u2014like hanging out with friends, dining out, even going to the barbershop\u2014are taken away from us, creating a personal self-care routine becomes even more important.\r\n\r\nThat\u2019s why self-care is on everyone\u2019s mind right now. We\u2019re scrambling for ways to deal with what\u2019s going on in the world. Especially if you\u2019re a dude, who as a group are notorious for neglecting themselves.\r\n\r\nWe tend to think of self-care as what we see on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/healthy-social-media-habits\/\">social media<\/a>: elaborate bathing routines, sunrise yoga, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/silent-meditation-retreat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hours spent in advanced meditation<\/a>, an insanely complicated #selfcaresunday DIY spa ritual. These images make self-care seem like a real <em>commitment<\/em>, you know? And you scroll past them thinking you could never do that.\r\n\r\nBut I\u2019ll let you in on a secret: Self-care doesn\u2019t have to be elaborate. At its base level, self-care is doing something because it makes you feel good. And it could be almost anything!\r\n\r\nChances are you\u2019re already doing some things that count as self-care. Maybe you\u2019ve adopted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/home-full-body-workout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new home workout routine<\/a> lately. Welcome to self-care. Have you been going to bed earlier? That\u2019s self-care, as well. Perhaps you\u2019ve decided to eat a little healthier and cook more of your own food. That definitely counts as self-care, too.\r\n<h2>6 Simple Self-Care Ideas for Men<\/h2>\r\nSelf-care shouldn\u2019t be intimidating. It\u2019s all about developing practices that make you feel more relaxed, less stressed, and generally better.\r\n\r\nIn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Self-Care-Men-Look-Good-Great\/dp\/1507212542\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">my book<\/a>, I outline a variety of ways men can begin to develop a self-care practice. Self-care is not one-size-fits-all, and your practice can be simple or elaborate. Develop A Skincare Routine<\/h3>\r\nThe reason many guys don\u2019t get into skincare is because it seems complicated, but I\u2019m here to tell you it\u2019s not! Not only will a skincare routine keep you looking great in both the short and long terms, but it can actually make you <em>feel<\/em> better, too.\r\n\r\nCreating a skincare ritual is tactile, as you\u2019re actively applying products to your face. It helps you connect with your body and disconnect from the world, even for just a minute or two.\r\n\r\nTo create your own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/mens-skincare-routine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">men&#8217;s skincare routine<\/a>, start simple:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Wash your face morning and night, and apply a moisturizer after washing.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>If you\u2019re concerned about signs of aging, dab on an eye cream before you put on moisturizer. (FYI, the eyes are the first place many men notice signs of aging.)<\/li>\r\n \t<li>If your moisturizer contains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/does-layering-spf-work\/\">SPF<\/a>, that\u2019s great. If it doesn\u2019t, apply a lightweight sunscreen on top of it in the morning.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>2. Practice Better Sleep Hygiene<\/h3>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/mighty-night\/\">Sleep<\/a> is the ultimate self-care move. Sleeping is something you can do with very little effort (literally, in your sleep) and has wide-ranging positive effects on both your body and your mind.\r\n\r\nYour body repairs itself while you sleep, which is an important part of muscle recovery, for example. But sleep is also incredibly important for the brain. A lack of sleep can lead to increased stress, memory issues, and even long-term health problems.\r\n\r\nThink about your sleep hygiene, aka what you\u2019re doing to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/the-sleep-doctor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">set yourself up for the best sleep possible<\/a>. Creating a self-care routine focused on sleep hygiene could include:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>turning off all screens two hours before bed<\/li>\r\n \t<li>not eating late at night<\/li>\r\n \t<li>avoiding stimulants like caffeine<\/li>\r\n \t<li>taking a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/mighty-night\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">natural sleep aid<\/a><\/li>\r\n \t<li>lowering the temperature of your room<\/li>\r\n \t<li>getting blackout curtains to keep out light pollution<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>3. Go On Walks<\/h3>\r\nWhether we do it or not, we all know exercising has a variety of benefits. They include boosting your mood, regulating your weight, and improving your mood and sleep. But you don\u2019t have to hit the gym hard every day to get these benefits.\r\n\r\nChanging your attitude toward exercise from something you <em>have<\/em> to do to something you <em>want<\/em> to do can turn it into a self-care practice.\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/benefits-of-walking-daily\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Going on walks<\/a>\u2014especially if you\u2019re working from home or feel confined to one space\u2014isn\u2019t necessarily about burning calories. Taking a break and getting out into nature can improve your mood immediately and help you manage stress better.\r\n\r\nBonus points if you have a forest or park nearby. A Japanese practice called forest bathing, which is basically a walk in a forest, shows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5580555\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">proven benefits<\/a> to stabilize your mood and lift your spirits.\r\n\r\n<img data-dominant-color=\"bbb1a3\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #bbb1a3;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21428 size-full not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Take-a-Bath-Simple-Self-Care-Ideas-for-Men-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition.jpg\" alt=\"Bath accessories from Garrett Munce\" width=\"770\" height=\"589\" \/>\r\n<h3>4. Take A Bath<\/h3>\r\nWhen you think about self-care routines, you probably think of baths. That\u2019s because baths have it all! They force you to unplug (both literally and figuratively), and in most cases allow you to be alone for a long-ish <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/this-is-what-your-period-is-saying-about-your-health\/\">period<\/a> of time.\r\n\r\nBaths have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6011066\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">proven health benefits<\/a>, too. Soaking in warm water has been shown to:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>aid in muscle recovery<\/li>\r\n \t<li>increase circulation<\/li>\r\n \t<li>ease pain<\/li>\r\n \t<li>strengthen your heart<\/li>\r\n \t<li>regulate your mood<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nBut lots of guys don\u2019t take baths because they&#8217;re a commitment. However, I urge you to lean in to that commitment. Even if you don\u2019t do it often, setting time aside to take a bath will leave you not only cleaner, but also happier.\r\n<h3>5. Start Supplementing<\/h3>\r\nWe all know that our diet has a lot to do with how our bodies feel. When you eat better, you feel better\u2014plain and simple.\r\n\r\nBut adding a supplement to your diet that could help you manage stress better might not be something you\u2019ve thought of. Case in point: the scented candle.\r\n\r\nIf you usually light a candle to cover up smells before you have company, rethink how you\u2019re using them. Choosing (and lighting) the right candle can have an immediate impact on your mood because aromatherapy is real.\r\n\r\nStudies have shown that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2221169115001033\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">certain smells induce reactions<\/a> in our brains. Lavender, for instance, affects the part of our brains that&#8217;s responsible for relaxation and sleep. Citrus, on the other hand, promotes an energizing and focusing effect.\r\n\r\nUsing these aromatherapeutic benefits of candles to help you destress or focus is one of the easiest acts to incorporate into even the most basic self-care practice for men.\r\n<h2>Final Thoughts<\/h2>\r\nContrary to what you may think, starting a self-care routine is easy: All it takes is one simple thing. And while these are some of my favorite practices, self-care is personal. Remember that it might take a bit of trial and error to find something you like enough to stick with.\r\n\r\nFurther, just because I\u2019ve been talking about self-care for men doesn\u2019t mean that these practices are exclusive to guys only.\r\n\r\nThese self-care tips are simple and easy to adopt for a man or anyone else who wants to begin building a self-care practice, yet doesn\u2019t quite know where to start.
