Another study suggests that there are strong associations between vitamin D deficiency and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31722673\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cognitive decline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Less severe (but still unfavorable) consequences of low vitamin D intake include<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26543719\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fatigue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23428658\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">potential hair loss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In short, vitamin D is an essential nutrient for optimal health and should be a component of most healthy diets. Consequently, many of the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/foods-high-in-vitamin-d\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\"> best food sources of vitamin D<\/a> are in animal-based products like egg yolk, fatty fish, and liver. They can help fill in potential nutrient gaps in your diet, particularly in those that increase the risk for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/reasons-to-take-supplements\/\">nutrient deficiencies<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>As a dietitian, I believe that one of the best ways to optimize vitamin D intake\u2014especially for vegans and vegetarians\u2014is through supplementation.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-non-vegan-vs-vegan-vitamin-d-supplements\"><strong>Non-Vegan vs. <\/strong><strong>Vegan Vitamin D<\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>Supplements<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-types-of-vitamin-d\"><strong>Types of Vitamin D<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>There are two main types of vitamin D:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol)<\/li><li>Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<p>Of the two forms, vitamin D3 is the gold standard for supporting healthy vitamin D levels.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Calcifediol is a term that describes the final form of vitamins D2 and D3 once the liver breaks them down. Vitamin D status is a reflection of the blood\u2019s level of calcifediol. Collectively, researchers have suggested that vitamin D3 is<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22552031\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> more effective<\/a> in raising calcifediol levels than vitamin D2.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, the most common source of vitamin D in plants and fortified plant-based foods is vitamin D2. Similarly, many vitamin D supplements aren&#8217;t vegan because they rely on animal-based sources of vitamin D3 such as the skin of fatty fish and lanolin from sheep&#8217;s wool. We like to use extra virgin olive oil for best results.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-recommended-dose-of-vitamin-d\"><strong>Recommended Dose of Vitamin D<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>According to the National Institutes of Health, most adults should aim for a vitamin D daily dose of<a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/VitaminD-Consumer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> at least 600 IUs<\/a>. However, experts believe this recommendation is too low and suggest that higher doses can lead to better health outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>In fact, research shows that taking<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/20194238\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> 2,000 IUs<\/a> (or 50 micrograms) of vitamin D3 daily can help achieve better a vitamin D status. That said, I recommend finding a vitamin D supplement that contains 2,000 IUs of vitamin D3 in cholecalciferol, its most bioavailable form.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Lastly, you might be wondering how much vitamin D is too much. I don&#8217;t suggest exceeding 4,000 IUs per day\u2014the tolerable upper limit for adults\u2014without first consulting your doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-bottom-line\"><strong>The Bottom Line<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>There actually <em>are<\/em> vegan sources of vitamin D. While they&#8217;re especially helpful for those on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/plant-based-diet-for-beginners\/\">plant-based diets<\/a>, they work just as well for people who eat animal products, too.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>When shopping for a vegan vitamin D supplement, look for these three key traits:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Check if it&#8217;s vitamin D from lichen vs. lanolin (in D3 cholecalciferol form)<\/li><li>Ensure that lichen D3 contains a fat component (such as EVOO)<\/li><li>Look for one that packs 2,000 IUs of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol)<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n<p>The days of asking yourself if vitamin D is vegan are over.
