Such tasks include sitting, standing, walking, lifting, pushing, pulling, rotating, and climbing.\r\n\r\nA functional exercise program combines multidirectional movements utilizing multiple muscle groups. Unfortunately, the loss of muscle mass results in reduced strength and function.\r\n\r\nThis decrease affects posture, stability, coordination, and endurance. With these realities in mind, it&#8217;s clear that functional exercises are essential to encourage active, healthy daily living.\r\n<h3>Requires Minimal Equipment<\/h3>\r\nLastly, a major benefit of functional fitness is that many of the exercises require just your body weight. Meanwhile, other moves call for minimal equipment such as resistance bands or dumbbells.\r\n<h2>The 7 Functional Movements<\/h2>\r\n<h3>1. SQUATS<\/h3>\r\nSquats involve multiple muscles (quads, hip flexors, gluteus, and hamstrings) in your legs. They also require core strength.\r\n\r\nThey&#8217;re essential for many aspects of everyday life, like standing up from a seated position. They&#8217;re great for improving your range of motion and balance, while also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/target-belly-fat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">strengthening the core<\/a>, hips, and gluteus.\r\n\r\nThis type of functional movement is a part of walking, running, and climbing stairs.\r\n\r\nExamples of lunges include:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>walking lunges<\/li>\r\n \t<li>lateral lunges<\/li>\r\n \t<li>curtsy lunges<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>3. Pushes<\/h3>\r\nPush type exercises are great for your upper body (shoulders), chest, and core strength. Pulls<\/h3>\r\nSimilar to the push movement, pull movements are also separated into two movement patterns: horizontal pulling and vertical pulling.\r\n\r\nThese functional fitness moves are ideal for strengthening the back, biceps, and triceps. Thankfully, they can help improve posture and prevent back injuries.\r\n\r\nPulling movements are also great for improving grip strength, which is essential for activities like walking your dog and carrying heavy bags. They also come in handy for opening jars.\r\n\r\nPull exercises include:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>pull-ups<\/li>\r\n \t<li>lawn mower band pulls<\/li>\r\n \t<li>bent over row<\/li>\r\n \t<li>lat pull-downs<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>5. Hinges<\/h3>\r\nHip hinge movements are utilized every day. When done properly, they help with range of motion, balance, and strengthening the core. The back-body muscles such as hamstrings, gluteus, and the muscles along the spine are also involved.\r\n\r\nWe use hinge movements when we bend forward to pick things up. We also perform them in almost every sport.\r\n\r\nHinge movement exercise examples include:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>deadlifts<\/li>\r\n \t<li>kettlebell swings<\/li>\r\n \t<li>hip thrusts<\/li>\r\n \t<li>weighted glute bridges<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>6. Rotations + Twists<\/h3>\r\nThe trunk muscles (core, obliques, lower back) help with balance and stability, and when you transfer power from one half of the body to the other.\r\n\r\nWe make rotational movements all day, every day. For instance, they include any time you reach across your body, like turning around to grab something. They combine all seven functional movements for a total body workout.\r\n\r\nComplete two to four rounds of this functional workout, performing each individual exercise with 10 to 15 reps using moderate dumbbell weights.\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li>Squat with overhead dumbbell press<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Alternating forward lunge with crossbody punches<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Inchworm to pushup<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Single-leg dumbbell row (10 reps for each leg)<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Seated dumbbell Russian twist<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Bear crawl<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<h2>The Bottom Line<\/h2>\r\nIn sum, your strength training program should include each of the seven functional exercises.\r\n\r\nWith functional fitness, the primary goal is to build upon the fundamentals of human movement.
