Enter: mindful eating.\n\nWe asked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azulfit.com\/team-members\/jo-dombernowsky\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jo Dombernowsky<\/a>\u2014a nutrition advisor, chef, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azulfit.com\/product\/truly-healthy-delicious-guilt-free\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cookbook author<\/a>, and celebrated yoga and Pilates instructor\u2014for all the details. It's slowing down and savoring your food, even indulgences like wine\" width=\"770\" height=\"514\">\n<h2>What is mindful eating?<\/h2>\nAccording to Jo, mindful eating is all about cultivating awareness around our food choices. The key is to focus on meals that aren&#8217;t only nourishing, but satisfying as well. \u201cEach meal is an opportunity to care for your body by providing nutritious and delicious options,\u201d she explains.\n\nJo explains that there&#8217;s an active practice to the method. \u201cAn observation of sensations, of cultivating healthy choices, and creating fulfilling routines and rituals [all play a role],\u201d she says.\n\nOf course, mindfulness is a central component. Once you sit down to eat, you should steer clear of phones and other distractions. The practice of mindful eating entails &#8220;<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-to-be-more-present\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">focusing our attention on the present moment<\/a> and the tastes and textures of our meal. This allows the signals our body sends to guide us more intuitively towards healthy habits,\u201d Jo says.<\/span>\n<h2>Benefits of Mindful Eating<\/h2>\nBeing extra aware of what you eat is an obvious answer. Yet additionally, Jo says that mindful eating can reduce stress and promote healthier food responses.\n\n\u201cWe live in a very fast-paced world with lots of demands on our time,\u201d she explains. \u201cThis has a negative impact on what and how we eat, which directly impacts our health and well-being.&#8221; Choosing good-for-you foods and eating them without distractions &#8220;not only increases our satisfaction, [but also] decreases stress. In creating a positive routine around our meals and choices, we can \u2018rewire\u2019 our brain, or unlearn habits we&#8217;ve cultivated as emotional responses.\u201d\n\nHowever, creating a mindful eating routine extends beyond mealtime. It seeps into every aspect of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/meal-prep-for-beginners\/\">meal-prepping process<\/a>.\n\nJust as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/feng-shui-bedroom-layout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">creating a calming sleep space<\/a> is beneficial for the body and mind, planning meals proactively, putting time and thought into what you eat off of and from, buying nourishing ingredients, and creating a space to bring it all together reaps discernible benefits. \u201cThis routine of eating at set times in set places we&#8217;ve nurtured leads to better habits, better <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/mighty-night\/\">sleep<\/a>, and reduced stress,\u201d Jo adds.\n\n<img data-dominant-color=\"807756\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #807756;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19992 aligncenter not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Mindful-Eating-Eat-Fresh-Whole-Foods-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition.jpg\" alt=\"Woman shopping for fresh whole foods as the first step of mindful eating\" width=\"770\" height=\"514\">\n<h2>How to Eat Mindfully<\/h2>\n<h3>Slow Down<\/h3>\nIn order to master mindful eating, Jo insists that you must slow down. \u201cSlowing down and creating a new routine around our meals allows us to become more aware of our physical needs,\u201d she says. \u201cThis better guides our decisions around food and creates a healthier lifestyle.\u201d\n<h3>Shop for Nourishing Foods<\/h3>\nIn addition to slowing down, it\u2019s essential to set yourself up for success. One of the best ways to do so is to organize your pantry and fridge in favor of nourishing ingredients.\n\n\u201cMake a list of nutrient-rich, healthy foods you might need,\u201d Jo says. \u201cThis will help create flow and will remove some temptations which might be linked to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/supplement-to-reduce-cravings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">your emotional response to food<\/a>.\u201d\n<h3>Prize Fresh, whole Foods<\/h3>\nAdditionally, when making choices, she says to consider nutrition and vitality. \u201cIf the product is processed or packaged, perhaps consider a natural or fresh alternative,\u201d she suggests. For instance, \u201cfresh fruit as an alternative to packaged food will encourage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/healthy-snacks-weight-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">healthier snacking<\/a>.\u201d\n<h3>Practice Gratitude<\/h3>\nAnother idea is to focus on where the ingredients are from. \u201cIt can be a great practice to take a moment to cultivate gratitude for the choices we have,\u201d Jo says.\n<h2>Can you eat anything with this technique?<\/h2>\nNow that you know how to practice mindful eating, you might wonder if there are any hard restrictions.\n\nGiven mindful eating is all about nourishment, you might think that certain items\u2014like chocolate and alcohol\u2014are off the table. But thankfully, that\u2019s not the case.\n\nInstead, if you\u2019re going to indulge in them, take the moment to slow down and focus. By thoroughly enjoying every sensation, you can eat with mindfulness and appreciation from the start. It focuses on emotion, rational thought, and instinct.\n\nWith intuitive eating, Jo says, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/7-extreme-diets-rated\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">diets and deprivation<\/a> are rejected, along with any emotional cues that might trigger a binge. It encourages us to review our habits and the emotional reactions that accompany them to develop a healthier, more balanced approach to long-term health.\u201d\n\nMindful eating, on the other hand, focuses solely on the reactions to the preparation and consumption of food. Some say that mindful eating is a component of intuitive eating. That&#8217;s because it plays into how well one can eat with emotion, rational thought, and instinct in mind.\n<h2>The Bottom Line<\/h2>\nIn sum, Jo says that mindful eating is the practice of listening to your body and feeding it accordingly.\n\nIt&#8217;s \u201cmaking a renewed promise and commitment to our health.
