Keep reading to learn five key considerations to keep in mind.<\/em>\n\nNow more than ever, therapy is on the rise. (Or, rather, open communication about it is.) As the stigma continues to dwindle, more and more people are seeking the mental health support they deserve. If you\u2019ve been considering doing the same but aren\u2019t quite sure where to start, we\u2019ve got you covered.\n<h2>5 Considerations for Choosing a Therapist<\/h2>\n<h3>1. Think about what you\u2019re looking for<\/h3>\nDo you want someone to push you, or do you prefer someone who will simply listen and support you? Does a combination of both sound ideal? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wellwithrisha.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Risha Nathan, LCSW, HHC<\/a>, an NYC-based clinical social worker and therapist, says the first step is to think about what type of intervention might work best for you. \u201cThis is dependent on the issues you\u2019re willing to work through, where you\u2019re at emotionally, and where you\u2019d ultimately like to get to,\u201d she says.\n<h3>2. Research different modalities<\/h3>\nHow do you hope to achieve the support you&#8217;re looking for? That\u2019s where research modalities come into play.\n\n\u201cTherapists are trained in numerous philosophical and practical modalities,&#8221; says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.diyhuman.org\/about-our-founder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shari Foos, MA, MFT, MS<\/a>, an LA-based marriage and family therapist and creator of group wellness retreat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.diyhuman.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DIY Human<\/a>. &#8220;Do some research on the type of therapy a person offers and determine what you think might be your best match based on your personality and your needs.&#8221;\n\nIf you&#8217;re not sure what to ask, Shari says to start with the basics, and suggests inquiring about the following:\n<ul>\n \t<li>how the modality works<\/li>\n \t<li>how often you&#8217;ll meet<\/li>\n \t<li>how you&#8217;ll work together<\/li>\n \t<li>what you can expect from the sessions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>3. Determine what you\u2019re willing to pay<\/h3>\nNext in your quest to choose a therapist, consider what type of fees you\u2019re willing to pay. \u201cYou&#8217;re paying for a service\u2014and someone&#8217;s time and expertise\u2014and it may take a while,\u201d says Shari, who&#8217;s also the founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenarrativemethod.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Narrative Method<\/a>.\n\nGiven the financial realities of therapy, Shari recommends getting clarity about fees (late cancellations, sick fees) and whether they bill per session or monthly. \u201cDon\u2019t leave any gray areas open,\u201d she says.\n\n<img data-dominant-color=\"b5ada5\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #b5ada5;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19049 aligncenter not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/How-to-Choose-a-Therapist-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition-1.jpg\" alt=\"Woman in a mental health therapist session while therapist takes notes\" width=\"770\" height=\"513\" \/>\n<h3>4. Trust yourself<\/h3>\nThe bond you create with your therapist should be just like any other in which you&#8217;re invested. \u201cIf you don\u2019t feel comfortable with the person, or there is a nag in your gut that something is wrong, off, or otherwise, you&#8217;re not in sync\u2014don\u2019t assume there\u2019s something wrong with you, and don&#8217;t feel obligated to move ahead\u201d Shari advises.\n\nInstead, Shari says to shop around for a therapist with whom you feel 100-percent comfortable. \u201cQualifications are impressive, but the quality of the person and their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/human-connection-and-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ability to connect<\/a> with and understand you and your needs always trumps diplomas and degrees,\u201d she adds.\n\nRisha tacks onto this idea, reminding us to pay attention to the openness and comfort you feel with your therapist. \u201cRemember that openness and insight equal an opportunity for growth,\u201d she says. \u201cBefore deciding if someone is or isn\u2019t the right fit, check in with yourself. Determine what changes you\u2019re actually open to making and what you\u2019d need to push that forward.\u201d\n<h3>5. Be prepared to do the work<\/h3>\nAs with anything, you\u2019re only getting to get as much out of therapy as you put into it. \u201cIt&#8217;s a partnership, so be ready to do the work required\u2014out of, in, and in between sessions,\u201d Shari says. This includes doing your assigned homework and keeping your own records to support your sessions.\n\n\u201cWhether you prefer journaling or simply reflecting after sessions, be mindful of what the experience yields. The deeper you get into the therapeutic work, the more realizations and questions will come up,\u201d she continues. \u201cFollow through with those thoughts or observations and bring them to your therapy session to maximize your benefits.\u201d\n<h2>Why Therapy Is Important<\/h2>\nTherapy can be entirely life-changing if you find the right therapist and put in the necessary work. \u201cPsychotherapy gives you the chance to broaden your perspective and better understand the events and feelings in your life and the world, as well as others around you,\u201d Shari says. \u201cMany of us are taught that what society or family members believe is right, is.\u201d But, at the end of the day, we\u2019re all individuals.\n\nAdditionally, Shari emphasizes the importance of our individual health and healing. \u201cIt&#8217;s not disrespectful to open the lid on any opposing thoughts or expose new thoughts, or [work to] understand our feelings,\u201d she says. \u201cThe truth of the matter is, opening that lid leads you to find and determine who you really are, separate from others. And, connecting to yourself during the most difficult times is a key ingredient to our survival and thriving in the future.\u201d\n<h2>One Final Tip<\/h2>\nLastly, one more thing: Cherish your therapy and keep it largely to yourself. While it\u2019s fine to share breakthroughs, Shari says that therapy should ultimately be personal and private. \u201cAvoid talking to friends about your treatment,\u201d she suggests. \u201cThere&#8217;s a sacredness and an objectivity with expertise in that room.
