Keeping your macronutrients (fat, protein, and carbs) in these ratios helps your body enter a fat-burning state called ketosis.\r\n\r\nCarb restriction is the key to ketosis. That\u2019s because restricting carbs keeps blood sugar and insulin levels low, which in turn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK499830\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">signals your liver<\/a> to start burning fat and producing ketones.\r\n\r\nThink of ketones as a backup superfuel for your body and brain. They supply cells\u2014especially brain cells\u2014with clean, efficient energy. Compared to glucose, for instance, ketones <a href=\"https:\/\/eurekamag.com\/research\/004\/357\/004357390.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">create less ROS<\/a> (a form of oxidative stress) when metabolized.\r\n\r\nAll this may seem rather complex, but don\u2019t worry: Your cells know what to do on a low-carb diet. Instead of running on sugar, they start running on fat. And when you run on fat, it\u2019s much easier to lose fat. Let\u2019s go a little deeper on that topic now.\r\n<h2>Keto Diet Health Benefits<\/h2>\r\nThe keto diet is popular for a reason: It works! Here\u2019s what the science says about four health benefits of going keto:\r\n<h3>1. Weight loss<\/h3>\r\nThe keto diet is best known as a weight loss diet.\r\n\r\nThis is no accident. The keto diet not only increases fat burning, it also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/what-your-food-cravings-mean\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reduces cravings<\/a>. That\u2019s a potent formula for weight loss.\r\n\r\nIn a <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jcem\/article\/88\/4\/1617\/2845298\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2003 study<\/a>, healthy women on a keto diet lost more weight than women on a calorie-restricted low-fat diet. Yes, the keto women didn\u2019t limit calories, and still lost more weight than calorie cutters.\r\n<h3>2. More stable energy<\/h3>\r\nWhen you eat a high-carb diet, your blood sugar goes up and down like a rollercoaster. The highs are high, but the lows are low. And low blood sugar means low energy.\r\n\r\nThe keto diet gets you off that rollercoaster. With no carbs to spike your blood sugar, you won\u2019t crash every few hours. Instead, you\u2019ll run on a more stable energy source: fat. <em>Bye bye, afternoon slumps.<\/em>\r\n<h3>3. Beef and broccoli works great too.\r\n\r\nWith that in mind, here are the foods allowed on keto:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/healthy-fats-list\/\">Healthy fats<\/a><\/strong>: includes olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, butter, lard, ghee, MCT oil, and red palm oil<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Nuts<\/strong>: includes macadamia nuts, walnuts, hazelnuts, and almonds<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Proteins<\/strong>: includes meat, fish, eggs, organ meats, shellfish, collagen protein, and whey protein<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Non-starchy vegetables<\/strong>: includes kale, spinach, watercress, broccoli, asparagus, lettuce, and cauliflower<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Flavorings<\/strong>: includes stevia, monk fruit, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and erythritol<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Beverages<\/strong>: includes coffee, green tea, black tea, herbal tea, broth, lemon juice, and almond milk<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nQuick note: There are several \u201cin-between\u201d foods to be enjoyed in moderation (not in excess) on keto. These foods include berries, dark chocolate, tomatoes, avocados, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/long-term-effects-of-alcohol\/\">alcohol<\/a>. Have them as an occasional treat and you\u2019ll be fine.\r\n<h2>What To Avoid On Keto<\/h2>\r\nThe most important rule of the keto diet is to ruthlessly cut carbs. Get this right and you\u2019re most of the way there.\r\n\r\nWith this priority in mind, your keto diet shouldn&#8217;t include:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Grains<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Anything with sugar<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Packaged or refined foods<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Fruits<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Starchy vegetables<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Industrial seed oils (also called vegetable oils)<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Artificial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/best-and-worst-sweeteners\/\">sweeteners<\/a><\/li>\r\n \t<li>Processed meats<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nYes, it seems restrictive. You might, for instance, have elevated ketones but not be using them efficiently.\r\n\r\nThat\u2019s why it\u2019s critical to track more subjective metrics like weight loss, energy, hunger, and mental acuity. If these are improving, you\u2019re on the right track.\r\n<h2>Tips For Starting The Keto Diet<\/h2>\r\nNow that you know the basics, here are some tips to get you rolling with keto:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>Give keto two to four weeks.<\/strong> This allows your body time to \u201cfat-adapt,\u201d i.e., unlocking the health benefits listed above.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Track macros.<\/strong> Use an app to record daily fat, protein, and carb intake, along with total calories. Doing so will help you catch hidden carbs so you can stay in ketosis.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Don\u2019t skimp on fat.<\/strong> Despite what conventional wisdom says, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-eating-fat-doesnt-make-you-gain-weight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fat is healthy<\/a>.
