Read on to learn why your body needs fat, the different types of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/healthy-fats-list\/\">healthy fats<\/a>, and one unhealthy type of fat you <\/em>should<em> avoid.<\/em>\r\n\r\nIt\u2019s time to bust this myth once and for all: Eating fat doesn\u2019t make you gain weight. Yes, you heard that right. Dietary fat doesn\u2019t make you gain weight!\r\n\r\nThis outdated idea started in the 1960-70s, then became the craze of the 1990s when low-fat foods were worshiped. From low-fat ice cream and crackers to low-fat peanut butter, these foods shaped the way people ate and thought about food for years to come.\r\n\r\nWhile more people are embracing healthy fats in their diet, for some there\u2019s still fear and confusion around this essential macronutrient.\r\n\r\n<img data-dominant-color=\"55513d\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #55513d;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18713 aligncenter not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Healthy-Fats-Benefits-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition.jpg\" alt=\"Man running in nature\" width=\"770\" height=\"467\" \/>\r\n<h2>Why your body needs healthy fats<\/h2>\r\nFats are one of the essential macronutrients along with carbohydrates and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-do-we-need-protein\/\">protein<\/a>. You need a certain amount of each of these macronutrients daily in order for your body to function optimally. Again, your body <em>needs<\/em> fat. Fat is your friend! It helps promote cell growth, hormone production, and protects your vital organs.\r\n\r\nHere are four more important benefits of dietary fat:\r\n<h3>Energy<\/h3>\r\nDietary fat contains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msdmanuals.com\/home\/disorders-of-nutrition\/overview-of-nutrition\/carbohydrates,-proteins,-and-fats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nine calories per gram<\/a>, making it more calorie-dense than protein and carbs. However, it&#8217;s not a bad thing! Fat provides your body with energy without spiking insulin production.\r\n<h3>Metabolism<\/h3>\r\nContrary to the common belief that fat makes you fat, it\u2019s actually the opposite! The truth is that eating healthy fat can help you burn fat by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/news-releases\/nih-study-finds-cutting-dietary-fat-reduces-body-fat-more-cutting-carb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">boosting your metabolism<\/a> and helping break down stored fat.\r\n<h3>Satiation<\/h3>\r\nHealthy fats also keep you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/satiating-diet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">feeling satisfied<\/a>. Why? They take more time to digest than carbohydrates. This increases your satiety and keeps you feeling fuller for longer. Think about eating a bag of pretzels versus a handful of nuts. The pretzels will leave you hungry an hour later, while the nuts hold you over. In addition, fats also make food taste better.\r\n<h3>vitamin absorption<\/h3>\r\nAnother main role of dietary fat is to help your body absorb fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. For instance, a big bowl of salad greens is full of vitamin K. However, in order to absorb the vitamin K, you need to include a healthy fat like avocado, nuts, seeds, or an oil-based salad dressing.\r\n<h2>The science behind weight and healthy fats<\/h2>\r\nWe can\u2019t talk about healthy fats without their connection to weight. Despite all the popular low-fat diets\u2014and on the other extreme, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/keto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">high-fat diets like keto<\/a>\u2014you need roughly 30 percent of your calories to come from healthy fats to promote health.\r\n\r\nIn regards to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-much-weight-can-you-lose-in-a-month\/\">weight loss<\/a>, there&#8217;s still much debate over what diet is best for weight loss. This is because laboratory studies cannot account for many of the internal and external factors that determine weight. However, there&#8217;s more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/landia\/article\/PIIS2213-8587(16)30085-7\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">compelling research<\/a> showing that high-fat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/what-is-the-mediterranean-diet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mediterranean-style diets<\/a> lead to a greater reduction in body weight and abdominal fat compared to traditional diets.\r\n\r\nStill, most people don&#8217;t weight because they eat too much healthy fat. The problem occurs when you have too much of <em>any<\/em> kind of energy, meaning you&#8217;re over-consuming calories.\r\n\r\nThe same is true when you eat too much fat coupled with sugars and processed carbs. It\u2019s not the fat itself that causes weight gain but rather the combination of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thesalt\/2019\/05\/16\/723693839\/its-not-just-salt-sugar-fat-study-finds-ultra-processed-foods-drive-weight-gain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fat and sugar in ultra-processed foods<\/a>\u00a0that influences your metabolism in a negative way.\r\n\r\n<img data-dominant-color=\"867c66\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #867c66;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18722 aligncenter not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Healthy-Fat-Avocado-Toast-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition.jpg\" alt=\"Avocado toast as an example of a healthy fat to eat\" width=\"770\" height=\"514\" \/>\r\n<h2>Types of Healthy Fats<\/h2>\r\nWith all this talk about fat, it\u2019s important to mention that not all fats are created equal. The type of fat you eat matters. When choosing healthy fats, it\u2019s best to focus on monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats (especially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/omega-fatty-acids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">omega-3s<\/a>) from whole-food sources.\r\n<h3>Healthy Sources of Monounsaturated Fat<\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Olives<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Olive oil<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Avocado<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Nuts<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Seeds<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3><strong>Healthy Sources of Polyunsaturated Fat<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Fatty fish (tuna and salmon)<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Walnuts<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Flax seeds<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Chia seeds<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Hemp seeds<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nIt\u2019s best to reduce the amount of processed polyunsaturated fats in the form of vegetable oils like canola, sunflower, and safflower, which are made up of mostly omega-6 fatty acids. While omega-6s are a necessary part of a healthy diet, most people consume way more than the ideal ratio of 3:1 omega-6s to omega-3 due to the widespread use of vegetable oils in processed foods and restaurants.\r\n<h2>Are Saturated Fats healthy?<\/h2>\r\nSaturated fats, like those in coconut oil and butter, are a little more difficult to address. Research previously linked saturated fats to an increased risk of heart disease and stroke. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/heart-disease\/news\/20140320\/dietary-fats-q-a#1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">newer research<\/a> shows that this finding may not be as accurate as we once thought. Many of the studies on saturated fat often look at people eating as part of an unhealthy diet full of refined carbohydrates and sugar while lacking veggies and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/benefits-of-soluble-fiber-vs-insoluble-fiber\/\">fiber<\/a>. In general, this eating style is linked to poor health outcomes, thus making the research inconclusive.\r\n\r\nWhen choosing saturated fats, moderation is key! Adding coconut oil or grass-fed butter to a saut\u00e9 pan can be part of a healthy low-sugar, whole-food diet\u2014but it\u2019s best to not overdo it.\r\n<h2>you should Avoid trans fats<\/h2>\r\nFinally, there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/trans-fat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">trans fats<\/a>. These manufactured fats are made by adding hydrogen to liquid vegetable oils to make them more shelf-stable. It\u2019s best to avoid these fats at all costs. They do nothing for your health, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3551118\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research shows they&#8217;re highly inflammatory<\/a> and linked to numerous health conditions.\r\n<h2>The Bottom Line<\/h2>\r\nYou don\u2019t need to fear fat! Eating healthy fats doesn&#8217;t lead to weight gain. But that doesn&#8217;t mean you have to go to the other extreme and adopt the keto diet. A moderate amount of healthy fats are needed for your body to function optimally. They&#8217;ll also help you absorb the fat-soluble vitamins, help keep you satisfied, and burn more fat in your body!\r\n\r\nSo next time you\u2019re making a quick meal or snack, make sure you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/healthy-fats-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">adding a little<\/a> healthy fat. Simple examples include adding an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/videos\/omg-healthy-delicious-caesar-salad-dressing-recipe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">oil-based dressing<\/a> to a salad and sprinkling hemp seeds on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/vegan-quinoa-bowl-recipe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">quinoa bowl<\/a>.
