You know the feeling when you can\u2019t stop thinking about french fries, chocolate ice cream, or that bag of crunchy potato chips luring you away from your desk for a midday snack. Eventually, your food cravings become so intense that you\u2019ll do anything to satisfy them.\r\n\r\nBut have you ever stopped to ask yourself why they arise, and what your food cravings actually mean? The main ones include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-blood-sugar-affects-food-cravings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blood sugar imbalances<\/a> and the need for quick energy. For example, following a diet high in refined carbohydrates (think white, bread, pasta, and sugar) causes drastic spikes and crashes in blood sugar. When your blood sugar falls, your body <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-to-beat-sugar-cravings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">responds by craving sugar<\/a> in hopes to stabilize your blood sugar quickly.\r\n\r\nEating this way over a long <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/this-is-what-your-period-is-saying-about-your-health\/\">period<\/a> of time also creates a preference for sweets. The reward center in your brain triggers a pleasure response with sweet foods. In turn, this makes healthier foods like fruit and vegetables less palatable.\r\n\r\nNext, your cookie or potato chip craving could also be due to a lack of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/mighty-night\/\">sleep<\/a>. Not getting enough sleep affects the body by <a href=\"https:\/\/elifesciences.org\/articles\/49053\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">altering hunger hormones<\/a>. When you don&#8217;t get adequate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/types-of-rest\/\">rest<\/a>, your body produces more ghrelin, a hormone that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/dinner-smallest-meal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">increases hunger and appetite<\/a>, while reducing leptin, your satiety hormone. Your body starts to feel hungrier throughout the day and crave quick energy in the form of refined carbohydrates and sweets.\r\n\r\nThe solution? Make sure your meals are balanced with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-do-we-need-protein\/\">protein<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/healthy-fats-list\/\">healthy fats<\/a>, vegetables, and complex carbohydrates. Also, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/the-sleep-doctor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">prioritize sleep<\/a>! Thus, the most common causes of salt cravings are dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. Dehydration occurs with fluid loss caused by the likes of excessive sweating, prolonged exercise, not drinking enough water, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/long-term-effects-of-alcohol\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">consuming too much alcohol<\/a>. Simply put, your salt craving is your body\u2019s way of looking to restore electrolyte and fluid balance.\r\n\r\nA\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2019\/03\/190327142021.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2019 study<\/a> also indicates that sodium deficiency causes your body to respond by craving salt. That said, sodium deficiency is far less common than dehydration. When you crave high-fat foods, it may indicate your body needs more calories. If you\u2019re on a low-calorie diet or restricting calories of any reason, you may find you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2019\/01\/190124115339.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">start craving high-calorie foods<\/a>. Know that it&#8217;s a signal from your body that you\u2019re not getting enough energy from your present food intake to function optimally.\r\n\r\nDon&#8217;t fear your hunger. It&#8217;s your body&#8217;s way of telling you it needs food for energy. On some days, you may be hungrier than others. Did you do an intense workout? Is it that time of the month? Did you forget <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/low-fodmap-breakfast-recipes\/\">breakfast<\/a> and only have a handful of nuts for lunch? It\u2019s also one of the most common cravings for women around that time of the month. Perhaps surprisingly, chocolate cravings <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5517000\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">aren\u2019t universal around the world<\/a>, which makes getting to the bottom of this one a little more challenging.\r\n\r\nA few reasons behind chocolate cravings include its rich magnesium content, ability to increase hormones in the brain, and sugar and fat content. Notably, <a href=\"https:\/\/nutritiondata.self.com\/facts\/sweets\/10638\/2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cacao is an excellent source of magnesium<\/a>. Since magnesium deficiency is quite common, it could be your body\u2019s way of signaling your need to add more magnesium-rich foods to your diet.\r\n\r\nChocolate also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10524390\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">increases serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin levels<\/a> in the brain. These neurotransmitters signal your reward pathways and happiness levels. In turn, it\u2019s easy to crave foods that bring you pleasure.\r\n\r\nTo curb your chocolate craving, go ahead and indulge in a square or two of dark chocolate (ideally with a cacao percentage of 70 or higher). It&#8217;ll give you your chocolate fix as well as a boost of antioxidants. Also, make sure to incorporate magnesium-rich foods in your diet, such as avocados, nuts, seeds, legumes, tofu, whole grains, and dark <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/benefits-and-types-of-leafy-greens\/\">leafy greens<\/a>.\r\n<h2>Other Things to Consider<\/h2>\r\nAside from your body\u2019s need for certain nutrients, other factors play into cravings. These include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/videos\/3-tips-for-better-sleep-hum-tips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lack of sleep<\/a>, unhealthy eating habits, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/vitamins-for-hormonal-imbalance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hormonal imbalances<\/a>, and dietary restrictions. To keep cravings at bay, it\u2019s important to make sure you eat a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/healthy-plate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">balanced diet of healthy fats, protein, and complex carbohydrates<\/a>, and ensure you&#8217;re eating enough calories.\r\n\r\nIf you find yourself with uncontrollable cravings, your best option is to indulge that craving. Giving yourself permission to enjoy your food without guilt can fully satisfy your food-specific desires. Doing so means you can walk past the break room without constantly thinking about cookies.
