Less touted, however, are the upsides and importance of alone time.\r\n\r\nSome people even notice negative consequences from lacking adequate time spent in solitude, culminating in a phenomenon recently called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0191886919303101\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">aloneliness<\/a>.\r\n\r\nTo better understand the breadth of solitude and the benefits of spending time alone, we spoke with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/thuyvytnguyen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thuy-vy T. Nguyen, PhD<\/a>, an assistant professor of social psychology at the University of Durham. She&#8217;s also a leading researcher at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solitude-lab.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Solitude Lab<\/a>, where she explores the different factors that determine whether participants\u00a0perceive solitude as pleasant or unpleasant.\r\n<h2>The Importance of Alone Time<\/h2>\r\nCurious to understand why alone time is important?\r\n\r\n&#8220;In our studies, we discovered that spending time alone provides the opportunity to <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/0146167217733073\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">regulate our arousal levels<\/a>,&#8221; Dr. Nguyen begins. Such kinds of arousal run the gamut from excitement and enthusiasm to anger and anxiety. &#8220;It&#8217;s good to carve out time for solitude when these feelings arise,&#8221; she continues, as stimulation abates in solitary settings.\r\n\r\nEven further, she explains that doing so permits you &#8220;to engage in successive experiences more refreshed and rejuvenated.&#8221;\r\n\r\nAdditional studies demonstrating the benefits of solitude are still in their infancy. Still, many people experience benefits such as heightened creativity, greater empathy, and strengthened social ties.\r\n<h2>Why do some people prefer to spend more time alone than others?<\/h2>\r\nAnd on that note, is wanting to be alone normal?\r\n\r\nWe live in age in which it&#8217;s expected to stay digitally connected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-the-internet-is-changing-your-brain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via smartphones<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-i-quit-social-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">social media<\/a>. With that said, many of us are no longer used to\u2014or even comfortable with\u2014good, old-fashioned alone time.\r\n\r\nIn fact, some have grown so accustomed to chronic stimulation that they&#8217;d flat out prefer pain to solitude. Across <a href=\"https:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/345\/6192\/75\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">11 studies<\/a> by UVA published in 2014, a quarter of women and two-thirds of men opted to receive an electrical shock than to sit alone undisturbed.\r\n\r\nHowever, there are certain types of people who desire, and even crave, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/30-day-meditation-challenge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">moments of quietude and stillness<\/a>.\r\n\r\n&#8220;Some people have tendencies or personality characteristics that are more predictive in their interest for solitude, such as those with dispositional autonomy,&#8221; Dr. Nguyen explains.\r\n\r\nThese types of people &#8220;take interest in their own experiences and do things that reflect their values and what they [intrinsically] believe,&#8221; instead of being more privy to externally imposed expectations and demands. &#8220;They&#8217;re more likely to find solitude enjoyable and embrace the opportunity to be alone,&#8221; she continues.\r\n\r\nYet importantly, as psychoanalytic political theorist\u00a0Matthew Bowker notes in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2017\/03\/the-virtues-of-isolation\/521100\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">March 2017 article<\/a> in <em>The Atlantic<\/em>, solitude isn&#8217;t exclusively limited to contained conditions. Instead, he says, &#8220;the value of solitude depends on whether an individual can find an interior solitude,&#8221; regardless of setting. Whether that happens a quiet room, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/benefits-of-walking-daily\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on a walk<\/a>, or in the middle of Times Square isn&#8217;t necessarily important.\r\n\r\n<img data-dominant-color=\"4b3d2a\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #4b3d2a;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17813 aligncenter not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Solitude-Importance-of-Alone-Time-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition.jpg\" alt=\"Man running in solitude at daybreak through the forest, who prizes fitness and the importance of alone time\" width=\"770\" height=\"514\" \/>\r\n<h2>Loneliness vs. Aloneliness<\/h2>\r\nIt&#8217;s important to recognize that while solitude can get a bad rap, it doesn&#8217;t require negative connotations.\r\n\r\nPut simply, feelings of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-to-deal-with-loneliness\/\">loneliness<\/a> can arise when you&#8217;re by yourself yet don&#8217;t want to be. But on the flip side, aloneliness encompasses an internal desire for solitude.\r\n\r\nThe key differentiation between the two is whether you make a conscious, active choice to be alone (i.e., whether or not it&#8217;s self-imposed). Along these lines, an additional consideration is whether you have the opportunity to re-enter social situations at will.\r\n<h2>pleasant vs. UNPleasant Solitude<\/h2>\r\nAt Solitude Lab, Dr. Nguyen conducts experiments investigating authentic\/pleasant solitude versus inauthentic\/unpleasant solitude (thus far in sample populations across the US and UK). Here&#8217;s how they differ.\r\n<h3>Authentic Solitude<\/h3>\r\nIn the midst of authentic solitude, you can engage in &#8220;things related to the satisfaction of psychological needs, such as autonomy, confidence, and the freedom to perform activities you find intrinsically interesting,&#8221; Dr. Nguyen explains.\r\n\r\nEssentially, such activities will be rewarding, so long as they fulfill desires that you set for yourself. They can range from working out to maintain a healthy body and mind, to solving puzzles for a sense of achievement and overcoming a challenge.\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/self-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dedicated self-care<\/a> also falls under this category. &#8220;Alone time is when you can take care of your own needs and not think about what other people want,&#8221; says Dr. Nguyen. &#8220;It&#8217;s also a great opportunity for self-reflection, which can lead to insight and better understanding of oneself.&#8221;\r\n\r\nSo-called me time is essential to evaluate your goals, values, and true desires independent of other people and culture at large.\r\n<h3>Inauthentic Solitude<\/h3>\r\nInauthentic solitude, on the other hand, can be disempowering and defeating.\r\n\r\nRegarding this unpleasant experience of time alone, Dr. Nguyen says that &#8220;people tend to report negative events or regrets, as well as feeling ineffective, like a failure, and isolated.&#8221;\r\n\r\nIf you ruminate over stressful scenarios or consistently engage in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/stop-negative-self-talk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">negative self-talk<\/a>, your alone time may fall under this category and work against you.\r\n\r\nOn a positive note, she&#8217;s pleased to find that her study participants generally experience more authentic than inauthentic solitude.\r\n\r\n<img data-dominant-color=\"888f7f\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #888f7f;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17859 aligncenter not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Woman-in-Fresh-Air-Importance-of-Alone-Time-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition.jpg\" alt=\"Woman on balcony with eyes closed, recognizing the importance of alone time and pleasant solitude\" width=\"770\" height=\"430\" \/>\r\n<h2>Final Thoughts<\/h2>\r\nBy now, you&#8217;ll understand that alone time is important. Yet still, Dr. Nguyen reminds us that the value of solitude doesn&#8217;t cancel out the need for healthy relationships and regular social interactions.\r\n\r\n&#8220;We tend to misunderstand the idea that solitude is something that&#8217;s incompatible to our nature as social beings. I haven&#8217;t seen the two pitched against each other in our works,&#8221; she begins. In essence, she indicates that social and solitary experiences aren&#8217;t mutually exclusive, and you can always enjoy the diverse benefits of both.\r\n\r\nFurthermore, valuing solitude isn&#8217;t merely a question of introversion versus extroversion. &#8220;Extroverts also need time to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/types-of-rest\/\">rest<\/a> and be by themselves,&#8221; she says. &#8220;Too much social interaction can fatigue them,&#8221; just like anyone else.\r\n\r\nAll things considered, solitude is neither inherently good nor bad.
