We surveyed 10,000 women and found some fascinating results!\n\n<!--more-->\n<h2>The HUM Energy Survey<\/h2>\n<img data-dominant-color=\"beb1a8\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #beb1a8;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1734 size-full not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/how-to-boost-energy-levels.png\" alt=\"Scattered desk with office supplies on tiring work day\" width=\"500\" height=\"342\" \/>\n\nWe asked 10,000 HUM consumers all about their\u00a0energy levels so that we could learn about your daily\u00a0habits and determine the best ways to fight fatigue. What did we find?\n<h3>the majority of women reach their energy low by 2:55 PM<\/h3>\nOn average, 2:55 PM is the time when energy drops for women across the country. We wanted to measure how this 2:55 PM slump can also affect your daily habits. To that end, we asked how much performance decreases during this time.\n<h3>A whopping 68% of respondents reported that when their energy is lowest, their productivity drops anywhere from 30-50%<\/h3>\nThat&#8217;s a huge loss in productivity due to a daily energy low! When your energy is low and subsequent productivity drops in half, it&#8217;s even easier to fall into a rabbit hole of\u00a0unhealthy choices that exacerbate fatigue and continue a cycle of energy spikes and crashes.\n\nTo combat this fatigue and subsequent loss of productivity, we wanted to see the healthy choices women are making to help keep them refreshed, focused, and inspired.\n<h3>Rather than reaching for caffeine and sugar, go for naturally energizing herbs &amp; green superfoods<\/h3>\nAs found in our survey, an energy slump can often lead to unhealthy choices. For instance, 28% of respondents said that with just 5 minutes to lift\u00a0their energy, they would reach for a sugary snack to give them a power boost.\u00a0Eating sugary food (high <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/best-way-to-lose-weight-fats-carbs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on the glycemic index<\/a>) results in a faster increase in blood glucose levels followed by the quick descent known as the sugar crash.\n\nOthers reported reaching for a Red Bull, 5 Hour Energy, or other energy drink, where not only a sugar crash is imminent, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/health\/what-an-energy-drink-does-to-your-heart-and-stress-152050965.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Mayo Clinic<\/a>\u00a0even found that these drinks can\u00a0increase\u00a0blood pressure, stress hormone levels, \u00a0and cardiovascular health risks.\n\nInstead, to boost your energy consider green superfoods like spirulina which is packed with 65% complete <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-do-we-need-protein\/\">protein<\/a>, antioxidants, and fatty acids as a natural source of\u00a0strength and energy. Naturally ramp up your metabolism with\u00a0Matcha Green Tea or Flaxseeds, which are packed with omega-3 fatty acids that are essential for oxygen flow and energy production.\n<h2>How to beat the AFTERNOON energy slump<\/h2>\nIn\u00a0the HUM Energy Level survey, we asked consumers\u00a0what they do when they\u00a0have\u00a0just 5 minutes to rejuvenate and refresh their\u00a0body and mind. To put the energy slump into perspective, here&#8217;s the breakdown of how women across the country are getting an energy boost in\u00a0under 5 minutes.\n\n<img data-dominant-color=\"a8d1e9\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #a8d1e9;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1756 size-full not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/HUM-survey.jpg\" alt=\"Survey infographic sharing tips for energy during an afternoon slump\" width=\"600\" height=\"773\" \/>\n<h2>Expert Energizing Solutions<\/h2>\nIn the US every day, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/balance\/features\/your-guide-to-never-feeling-tired-again\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2.2 million Americans<\/a> say they deal with fatigue and a lack of energy &#8212; so it makes sense there are\u00a0a variety of tips &amp; tricks for re-energizing, from getting\u00a0caffeinated to meditative. We looked at the research behind these\u00a0habits\u00a0to recommend the best quick &amp; easy ways to keep you humming all day long.\n<h3>1. Snack on energizing herbs + green superfoods<\/h3>\nAs described above, snacking on fruits and veggies while avoiding foods and drinks high in glycemic content, sugar, and caffeine is the #1 way to stay energized throughout your day. Half of all responders mention snacking on fruits or veggies for\u00a0an easy\u00a0pick-me-up, and this is a helpful hint. Apart from the high water content &amp; naturally hydrating properties of fruits and veggies like broccoli, carrots, and blueberries, keeping your body nourished with these vitamins and minerals will keep your body feeling strong and vital. Spinach, for instance, is packed with chlorophyll (which helps to rebuild and replenish red blood cells for a powerful energy boost) as well as vitamins A, C, B2, K, E, manganese, folate, magnesium, iron, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/benefits-of-soluble-fiber-vs-insoluble-fiber\/\">fiber<\/a>, and more &#8212; and amazing energizing boost.\n\nIn addition, avoiding sugary foods with a high glycemic content will keep your blood sugar levels, and thus energy levels, stable rather than spiking and crashing. Go instead for naturally energizing superfoods such as\u00a0spirulina or kale, or\u00a0metabolic boosters like Matcha Green Tea or\u00a0Flax Seed.\n<h3>2. Hydrate<\/h3>\n55% of people mentioned drinking water to help wake up from a slump &#8211; and\u00a0with good reason. Dehydration (even mild) can force\u00a0your heart to work extra hard\u00a0to carry blood through your body, worsening\u00a0fatigue.\u00a0Make sure you&#8217;re drinking plenty of water even before\u00a0your daily energy low in order to stave it off.\n<h3>3. Stretch<\/h3>\n42% of respondents find 5 minutes of stretching a rejuvenating boost, and the research agrees. In particular, taking time for\u00a0deep breathing while you stretch forces more oxygen into your cells and keeps your heart rate steady, beneficial for energy.\u00a0Try these 4 easy steps for deep belly breathing, or you can also try these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/4-simple-yoga-poses-to-de-stress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">4 simple yoga poses<\/a>\u00a0to help relieve stress, which worsens fatigue.\n<h3><strong>4. Listen to your favorite song<\/strong><\/h3>\n32% reported listening to their favorite song to get energized, and while it makes sense that\u00a0listening to your favorite tunes can lift your mood, there is another benefit here, too: taking a break. <a href=\"https:\/\/money.usnews.com\/money\/careers\/articles\/2010\/11\/23\/the-value-of-a-true-lunch-break\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">This poll <\/a>found\u00a0that fewer than half employees leave their desks for lunch each day &#8211; and this can have a profound affect on your energy &amp; productivity. Even a &#8216;microbreak&#8217; such as listening to music can help you feel refreshed.\n<h3>5. Chat with a friend<\/h3>\n20% mentioned chatting with a friend can lift their spirits and get them inspired. Various studies have looked into the benefits of social interactions, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biomedcentral.com\/1471-2458\/13\/613\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this report <\/a>that found social participation was associated with adequate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/mighty-night\/\">sleep<\/a>, getting daily veggies, and psychological well-being.\n<h3>6. Meditate<\/h3>\nWhile only 10% of respondents meditate to boost energy, it might be a helpful to consider adding it into your routine: the\u00a0report\u00a0from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/mindfulness-meditation-helps-fight-insomnia-improves-sleep-201502187726\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this Harvard publication<\/a>\u00a0cites mindfulness <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-to-start-meditating\/\">meditation<\/a> as helpful\u00a0in fighting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/bedtime-latte-recipes\/\">insomnia<\/a> and fatigue, while this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2013\/04\/30\/meditation-health-benefits_n_3178731.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yale researcher<\/a> found that meditation worked to lessen the body&#8217;s physiological response to stress.\n<h2>More Energizing Tips from You<\/h2>\nIn addition to these fatigue-busters supported by the experts,\u00a0some respondents\u00a0had developed some tricks of their own for getting through the energy crash, and shared their tips\u00a0in the hopes they may benefit\u00a0you too!\n<h3>7. &#8220;Climb stairs.&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>8. &#8220;Engage a colleague in conversation.&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>9. &#8220;Look at cute animal pictures online&#8230; particularly cats! :)&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>10. &#8220;I end up eating what the kids are eating after school&#8230;!&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>12. &#8220;Take a brisk walk to Starbucks for a nice cup of coffee. Walking with a purpose clears my head.&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>13. &#8220;Go outside with my dog.&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>14. &#8220;Push ups or squats.&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>15. &#8220;There are 2 basic Qi Gong exercises that take 3 minutes total.
