We have more control over aging than we think<b><br><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>But isn&#8217;t longevity hereditary? While our lifespan is partially influenced by our genetics, it\u2019s really only a small part. \u201cOnly 20 percent of our lifespan is determined by our parents,\u201d Dr. Sinclair tells us. \u201cThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/types-of-rest\/\">rest<\/a> is up to us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Consider, for instance, that life expectancy in the US has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrotrends.net\/countries\/USA\/united-states\/life-expectancy#:~:targetText=The%20current%20life%20expectancy%20for,a%200.08%25%20increase%20from%202018.\"><span class=\"s1\">increased by almost twenty years just in the last fifty years<\/span><\/a>. Our genes haven\u2019t changed, but our lifestyles and environments have. Indeed, advances in modern medicine have come a long way in eradicating deaths from diseases. Dr. Sinclair\u2019s lab works on how we can improve longevity even after you remove diseases from the equation.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cEven if we stopped cancer and heart disease individually today, we would only live another couple of years because we come up against aging itself. Longevity is not just about living longer, it\u2019s about living <i>better<\/i><b><br><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Dr. Sinclair\u2019s research on longevity isn\u2019t just about extending our lifespan by the numbers. It\u2019s about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/things-that-get-better-with-age\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">improving our quality of life<\/a> at these older ages.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne misconception is that research like mine will keep people in nursing homes for longer because they imagine what it\u2019s like to be ninety. But what we\u2019re talking about is actually keeping people younger for longer so they will not have to go into nursing homes,\u201d he shares. \u201cPeople aren\u2019t scared of getting old. They\u2019re scared of losing their health, and their humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-a-little-bit-of-deprivation-can-actually-be-a-good-thing\">3. A little bit of deprivation can actually be a good thing<b><br><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Modern living is very comfortable, but a little discomfort can actually encourage greater longevity.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve realized that all life on the planet does better when it thinks we\u2019re under threat of survival, or perceived adversity,\u201d Dr. Sinclair shares. \u201cIn our lab, we call it hormesis. It\u2019s the scientific term for \u2018whatever doesn\u2019t kill you, makes you stronger\u2014and live longer.\u2019 What it essentially means is that we have these in-built protective systems, longevity genes, and they are only activated when we\u2019re hungry, or exercising, or doing something that tricks our bodies into thinking times will be tough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>In his personal routine, Dr. Sinclair exercises regularly and tries to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/intermittent-fasting\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">skip one meal a day<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img data-dominant-color=\"847f85\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #847f85;\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Dr.-David-Sinclair-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition-770x513.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. David Sinclair at Harvard Medical School's Longevity Lab\" class=\"wp-image-16839 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-eat-more-plants-and-drink-red-wine\">4. Eat more plants\u2026 and drink red wine<b><br><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a set of longevity genes that are helpful when you don\u2019t have a lot of meat,\u201d Dr. Sinclair explains. For example, a longevity pathway called nTor is sensitive to the number of amino acids that come into the body. In particular, to some of the branched-chain amino acids that are more abundant in animal products.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s good about having low levels of branched-chain amino acids is, first of all, you\u2019ll probably be less hungry. But second of all, you\u2019ll turn on those nTor defensive pathways that, at least in the lab, extends lifespan of animals quite dramatically\u2014even late in life when it\u2019s applied.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Plants have another resiliency benefit. \u201cThey make molecules that turn on their own defenses,\u201d he shares.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have a theory called xenohormesis and that\u2019s the idea that stressed plants make molecules that help them, but also when we eat those plants we turn on <i>our<\/i> defenses.\u201d In following this theory, eating stressed plants that have been exposed to a lot of sun before harvest can help activate our body\u2019s natural defenses.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe best example is resveratrol in grapes. We bottle that in red wine and we\u2019ve found resveratrol activates a particular longevity pathway in the body. That\u2019s in part why we think red wine over the long run can be healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-its-never-too-late-to-implement-preventative-measures-for-aging\">5. It\u2019s never too late to implement preventative measures for aging<b><br><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>The best time to start implementing anti-aging tactics is right now, no matter your age. Of course, the earlier you can start, the better. However, \u201cIt\u2019s never really too late,\u201d Dr. Sinclair reassures us. A prime example? His father.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy father has been implementing changes and he\u2019s now 80,\u201d he shares. \u201cHe has small meals, he focuses on plants, he eats dark, green, leafy vegetables and isn\u2019t looking back at all.\u201d Even at his advanced age, his father is as physically fit as someone in their 20s or 30s.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf we can eat the right things, and move a little bit, that\u2019s already a big change in people\u2019s lives. It\u2019s all those simple things that we need to start with, and then add the science on top of that. That\u2019s why I\u2019m optimistic that it\u2019s doable.
