But is skin fasting actually the secret to saving money, time, and your skin? Here&#8217;s what experts had to say about this rising skincare trend. Plus: the results of my ill-advised weeklong trial.<\/p>\n<h2>What Is Skin Fasting?<\/h2>\n<p>Skin fasting is the practice of abstaining from the use of any skincare products for a set <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/this-is-what-your-period-is-saying-about-your-health\/\">period<\/a> of time. Consider it the antithesis of elaborate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/glass-skin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">multi-step glass skin routines<\/a>. And yet, some skincare enthusiasts swear by it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a great skin rejuvenation method established by some Japanese dermatologists and has been popular for over a decade in Japan,&#8221; explains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miraiclinical.com\/less-skin-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Koko Hayashi, founder of Mirai Clinical<\/a>, a skincare line that focuses on sharing holistic Japanese beauty secrets. In fact, Koko is credited with bringing the Japanese skin fasting craze to the United States.<\/p>\n<h2>How To Do Skin Fasting<\/h2>\n<p>Methods of skin fasts vary, with some users abstaining from skincare for several weeks at a time while others merely abstain at night. The latter approach is what Koko recommends.\u00a0This allows you to still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/chemical-vs-physical-sunscreen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">keep your skin protected during the day<\/a> under UV rays.<\/p>\n<h2>Possible Skin Fasting Benefits<\/h2>\n<p>The idea behind skin fasting is that when we relieve our skin from the constant onslaught of product, we allow it to rebalance itself naturally. &#8220;Skin has an innate ability to rejuvenate itself from within,&#8221; Koko explains. Without product, &#8220;the skin is forced to produce its own natural moisture and oils and balance, instead of depending on skincare creams.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Who Should Not Skin Fast?<\/h2>\n<p>An important caveat here, Koko doesn&#8217;t recommend skin fasting for anyone with extremely dry skin. For those with mildly dry skin, she suggests a more gradual transition.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If your skin is dry, don&#8217;t suddenly [fast],&#8221; she advises. Instead, &#8220;Reduce the amount of skincare cream little by little every night.&#8221; Also, for those with dry skin she recommends trying it during a rainy season when there is more natural humidity in the air.<\/p>\n<p><img data-dominant-color=\"7d7777\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #7d7777;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-16457 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Woman-Using-Skincare-Cream-770x513.jpg\" alt=\"Woman squeezing moisturizer from tube in bathroom\" width=\"770\" height=\"513\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>What Do Dermatologists Say?<\/h2>\n<p>For a dermatological perspective on skin fasting, I connected with <a href=\"https:\/\/waldorfderm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Heidi Waldorf, MD<\/a>. &#8220;There is NO scientific evidence that &#8216;skincare fasting&#8217; is beneficial,&#8221; she clarified from the get-go. &#8220;If anything, the opposite is true. Consistency is the key to success with any skincare routine. The [only] reasons to change your routine are changes in your environment temperature or humidity with location or season, and changes in your skin that occur with age, ailments, or procedures.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But what about all that talk about giving our skin a break to regenerate? &#8220;It is possible that your results plateau after long-term use [with products]. The answer isn&#8217;t to stop and restart the same treatment, but to build on your prior treatment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>My Skin Fasting Experience<\/h2>\n<p>Still, I was curious to try this trend firsthand. I committed to experimenting with a seven-day trial of my own. Typically, my daily skincare routine consists of a cleanser, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/toner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">toner<\/a>, serum, and a moisturizing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/does-layering-spf-work\/\">SPF<\/a> for the daytime. For background, my skin is on the drier side with some congestion in my cheeks and chin. In addition to my daily routine, I dabble in the occasional hydrating overnight or sheet mask.<\/p>\n<p>Despite Koko&#8217;s sound advice and warnings, I decided to go all in. For my weeklong fast, I abstained from\u00a0all makeup and skincare products, day and night, using only water to cleanse.<\/p>\n<p>But did it <em>actually<\/em> help kick my natural sebum production into high gear?<\/p>\n<h2>My 7-Day Skin Fasting Results<\/h2>\n<p>Not quite. It turns out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/truth-dry-skin-care-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dry skin<\/a> without product only gets drier. (I can&#8217;t say Koko didn&#8217;t warn me!) Looking at my before and after photos, the fine lines and wrinkles under my eyes look more pronounced after the skin fast. There&#8217;s also less bounce in my skin, and a lack of that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/products-for-glowing-skin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">glassy glow<\/a> I work so hard to achieve in my normal skincare routine.<\/p>\n<h3>Before &amp; After Photos<\/h3>\n<p><img data-dominant-color=\"a5877f\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #a5877f;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-16424 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Skin-Fasting-Before-After-770x433.png\" alt=\"Skin Fasting Before &amp; After\" width=\"770\" height=\"433\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>The Verdict<\/h2>\n<p>Admittedly, I basically did the skin fast all wrong. Seven days felt like both a short amount of time to experiment, yet also a dragging eternity without product. Nonetheless, I did appreciate the opportunity to check in on the natural state of my skin, even if it only confirmed what I already suspected.<\/p>\n<p>While I wouldn&#8217;t repeat a weeklong fast again knowing what I do now, I do like the idea of a seasonal weekend-long fast to reassess my natural skin&#8217;s needs\u2014or simply easing up on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/what-time-to-sleep-for-skin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nighttime products<\/a> to relieve the congestion in my skin.
