Here to advise is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/drjordanmetzl\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jordan Metzl, MD<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/qs6ev2pm8g9dS\/giphy.gif\" \/>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">At a recent wellness retreat, <span class=\"s1\">Dr. Metzl<\/span> addressed this phenomenon of mass misinformation. \u201cThe closer the worlds of medicine and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/home-full-body-workout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fitness<\/a> can come together, the better for everybody,\u201d shared the NYC doctor. Here are his key insights into how we can live healthier lives\u2014minus the BS.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"p1\">Wellness is a $4.2 Trillion Industry<\/h2>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/globalwellnessinstitute.org\/press-room\/statistics-and-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s1\">Global Wellness Institute\u2019s annual report<\/span><\/a>, $4.2 <em>trillion<\/em> was spent in the wellness (read: not medicine) industry in 2017. We can only imagine that the number has grown exponentially in the past two years. \u201cTo put that sum in perspective, the US government is spending about $3 trillion each year on healthcare and a humble $59 billion on education\u201d Dr. Metzl noted. That&#8217;s not to say you shouldn&#8217;t spend on wellness, of course\u2014just that it&#8217;s important to recognize that with increased interest also comes an influx of opportunists. For that reason, it&#8217;s important to do your own research and spend your hard-earned dollars with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/dietitian-vs-nutritionist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">experts<\/a> and businesses that provide credible goods and services.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"p1\">Your Lifestyle is More Important Than Your Genes<\/h2>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;Part of the big health problem is that we treat diseases like diabetes, heart attacks, and arthritis <em>after<\/em> they happen,\u201d the doctor emphasized. According to recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cdctv\/diseaseandconditions\/lifestyle\/obesity-epidemic.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s1\">CDC reports<\/span><\/a>, more than a quarter of the population suffer from obesity and diabetes. However, both are preventable. \u201cAbout 20 percent of your health is your genetic makeup,&#8221; Dr. Metzl says. &#8220;Another 20 percent is interacting with people like me,&#8221; aka seeing a physician. The remaining 60 percent is our lifestyle, meaning lifestyle habits account for more than genes and medical consults combined. Unfortunately, many medical practitioners aren&#8217;t well-versed in prescribing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/anti-inflammatory-lifestyle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lifestyle changes<\/a>. \u201cWe don\u2019t teach doctors how to prescribe nutrition, or how to think about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/mighty-night\/\">sleep<\/a>, mood, stress, or fitness\u2014but we should,&#8221; Dr. Metzl advised.<\/p>\r\n<img data-dominant-color=\"aaa791\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #aaa791;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15747 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Lifestyle-for-Longevity-The-Wellnest.jpg\" alt=\"Healthy lifestyle woman walking with bike in fall\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" \/>\r\n<h2 class=\"p1\">Researchers are Looking Closely at Daily Routines<\/h2>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">While we\u2019re starting to understand the simple concepts that actually contribute to our well-being, we still have a lot to learn. But researchers <em>are<\/em> moving in the right direction. \u201cTake <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lakenona.com\/\"><span class=\"s1\">Lake Nona<\/span><\/a> as a prime example,&#8221; Dr. Metzl shares. At Lake Nona, the residents live at a slightly discounted rate so they can be studied by the University of Florida. Researchers take note of their movements, what they eat, and even everybody they socialize with. Although it sounds a bit like <em>The Truman Show<\/em>, it&#8217;s a fascinating new approach to lifestyle science. \u201cAll the studies we have are retrospective, while this one will be the first <em>prospective<\/em>, meaning looking ahead,&#8221; Dr. Metzl explained.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"p1\">The Recipe for Wellness is Actually Pretty Simple<\/h2>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">Dr. Metzl recommends abiding by the four pillars of wellness: body, mind, nutrition, and also community. \u201cCommunity is one of the most unsung areas of wellness,&#8221; he shared. But how did it officially make the cut?<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">These four pillars are borrowed from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/okinawa-diet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blue zones<\/a>, areas in which people routinely live past the age of 100. Ranging from Japan to Greece to Costa Rica, it&#8217;s not that these distant communities abide by the same stringent set of rules, but rather embody a similar broad and balanced approach to health. &#8220;They don&#8217;t have a specific diet type,&#8221; Dr. Metzl explains. &#8220;They eat a little bit of everything. They don&#8217;t do SoulCycle. [But] they&#8217;re moderately active and they&#8217;re part of a community,&#8221; Dr. Metzl explained. Research further backs up the importance of community to our health. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/female-friendships-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Healthy relationships<\/a> can actually help us cope with stress and are even associated with improved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.takingcharge.csh.umn.edu\/july-social-wellness-month\" target=\"_blank\"
