Now it\u2019s all about designing your most productive schedule to finish the year on a high note. But how exactly does one switch from a laid-back summer mindset to a goal-getting one? That, my friends, is what productivity expert <a href=\"https:\/\/grace-marshall.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grace Marshall<\/a> is here to share. Keep reading for her top productivity tips to skillfully hack your daily routine.\n<h2>9 Expert-Approved Productivity Tips<\/h2>\n<h3>1. Don\u2019t start the day with email<\/h3>\nResist the impulse to automatically dive into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/inbox-zero-method\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">your inbox<\/a> upon waking. \u201cIt&#8217;s likely to be full of other people\u2019s priorities,\u201d Grace says. \u201cCheck in with <em>your<\/em> priorities for the day first, then check in with everyone else.\u201d\n<h3>2. Don\u2019t schedule every minute of the day<\/h3>\nPre-planning is good, but only up to a certain point. \u201cGive yourself a margin to deal with the unplanned (or what I like to call the \u2018predictably unpredictable\u2019), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/take-a-break\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">take breaks<\/a> to recover your energy and keep your attention sharp,\u201d she shares.\n<h3>3. Find the timing that works best for you<\/h3>\nAccording to Grace, there\u2019s no single amount of time you should spend on a specific task before taking a break. \u201cThe research on this varies,\u201d she says. \u201cThe Pomodoro Technique suggests working for 25 minutes, followed by a five-minute break. But some people find longer stretches more useful, especially in <a href=\"https:\/\/grace-marshall.com\/diving-deep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">deep dive work<\/a>. In practice, it depends on the person and the task at hand. Pay attention to when you notice your mind wandering, your energy dropping, or your muscles seizing up from sitting too long in one position. Then aim to stop before it reaches that point. Also pay attention to signs of <a href=\"https:\/\/grace-marshall.com\/decision-fatigue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">decision fatigue<\/a>.\u201d\n<h3>4. Take regular breaks<\/h3>\n\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/bkr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Drink water<\/a>. Move. Eat lunch away from your desk,\u201d Grace suggests. \u201cMix and match your tasks to your energy and attention levels. If you\u2019re a morning person, for example, use your peak performance time for the tasks that require your best thinking. Save quick, easy wins for when you find yourself in \u2018zombie mode.\u2019\u201d\n<h3>5. Discover your procrastination style<\/h3>\n\u201cWe all procrastinate\u2014it\u2019s a very human thing,\u201d Grace says, noting that it\u2019s important to find your procrastination style. \u201cIf you love a challenge, set mini targets for yourself and try and beat your personal best. You can also set yourself up in competition with someone else. On the other hand, if you\u2019re likely to avoid big challenges, then trick yourself into working by lowering the stakes. Tackle it in baby steps. Tell yourself you\u2019re not really going to write that article or that presentation; you\u2019re just going to get the file out or make some notes. Or, if you\u2019re a people pleaser, set a deadline in someone else\u2019s world: Tell someone what you\u2019re going to do, and by when, to create some accountability.\u201d\n\n<img data-dominant-color=\"a5aaaa\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #a5aaaa;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15536 aligncenter not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Two-Women-at-Work-Adopting-Productivity-Tips-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition-770x514.jpg\" alt=\"Two women at work delegating tasks and adopting productivity tips\" width=\"770\" height=\"514\">\n<h3>6. Learn to delegate<\/h3>\n\u201cOne definition of delegation is letting others do what they can do, so you can do what only you can do,\u201d Grace says. \u201cDelegating things you don\u2019t enjoy doing or don\u2019t have the expertise for is an easy decision to make. Delegating the things you do enjoy doing is harder. The question to ask yourself is, <em>What\u2019s the cost of doing this myself\u2014and is it worth it?<\/em>\u201d\n<h3>7. Don\u2019t get hung up on tracking your time<\/h3>\n\u201cThe problem with tracking time is the tracking itself can become onerous,\u201d Grace points out. \u201cPlus time without attention is completely useless. I find it far more meaningful to review and reflect on my attention, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/energy-boost-study-7-things-energetic-people-do\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">energy levels<\/a>, and progress with questions such as: <em>What took up most of my attention? How were my energy levels this week? Which tasks did I move forward on? What didn\u2019t get done? Should I change anything next week? What one thing will help me?<\/em>\u201d\n<h3>8. Take time to be mindful<\/h3>\n\u201cWe work with our minds,\u201d Grace says. \u201cAs knowledge workers, we create and add value with the thinking we do, ideas we have, and decisions we make. So taking care of our minds is crucial to doing good work\u2014both in terms of practicing mindfulness, as well as being mindful in thinking about the way in which we work rather than just the work that needs to get done.\u201d\n<h3>9. Dream big But start small<\/h3>\n\u201cGoals need to be meaningful to be motivating,\u201d Grace advises, noting that goals play a big role in productivity. \u201cActions need to be specific and doable. Be clear on your \u2018why\u2019 and go as big and as bold as you\u2019d like.
