It turns out that this go-getting, workaholic mentality comes at a steep price.\n\nIn May 2019, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/\">World Health Organization<\/a> (WHO) officially recognized job burnout as an \u201coccupational phenomenon.\u201d They included it in the revised International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), a diagnostic handbook referenced by clinicians and healthcare providers worldwide.\n\nHere&#8217;s why it&#8217;s so important to recognize the signs of burnout, plus how to deal.\n<h2>What is burnout?<\/h2>\nIn 1974, psychologist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1300\/J132v03n01_01?journalCode=wzlg20\">Herbert Freudenberger<\/a> introduced the term in a medical journal. He defined burnout as \u201csignificant changes in mood, attitude, motivation and personality\u201d among his fellow volunteers at a free mental health clinic.\n\nIn the decades since, the term expanded to apply to other facets of life. However, WHO\u2019s classification limits burnout solely to issues stemming from work.\n\nIt\u2019s also worth noting that burnout is a syndrome rather than a disease. Before diagnosing it, doctors must first rule out potential psychological ailments. These include anxiety, situational depression, and other disorders related to stress, mood, and fear.\n<h2>Why is the new classification important?<\/h2>\nThe official recognition of burnout is a major milestone.\n\nFirstly, it legitimizes the epidemic of work-related stress. In 2011, a German medical magazine published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22163259\">review<\/a> on the topic with the undermining title, \u201cBurnout: a fashionable diagnosis.\u201d (To be fair, however, the review pre-dated successive studies that thoroughly investigated job burnout.)\n\nSecondly, it brings greater awareness to the issue, and can help people decipher if they or their loved ones suffer from burnout symptoms. From there, they can take measures to offset adverse effects on their personal and professional well-being.\n\nFinally, it carries huge potential to incite significant, lasting changes in workplace culture and employee expectations. Going forward, WHO is developing evidence-based guidelines for mental well-being at work. The best-case scenario? But how about burnout symptoms specifically?\n\nWhile conclusive research is still underway, recent studies are emerging that identify some seriously harmful symptoms of burnout. One 2017 study found that burnout is associated with occupational issues like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5627926\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">job dissatisfaction and absenteeism<\/a>. Even further, it outlined alarming psychological and physical consequences.\n\nPotential health hazards include:\n<ul>\n \t<li>fatigue<\/li>\n \t<li>chronic sleep issues<\/li>\n \t<li>mood imbalances<\/li>\n \t<li>significant weight gain<\/li>\n \t<li>blood sugar imbalances<\/li>\n \t<li>cardiovascular complications<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nPlus, another study suggests that it can potentially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27167661\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lead to substance abuse<\/a>.\n\nWith such massive repercussions, it\u2019s crucial to recognize the signs of burnout sooner than later.\n<h2>Who\u2019s at risk?<\/h2>\nMuch of the existing research focuses on people with high-pressure occupations.\n\nA 2019 survey found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medscape.com\/slideshow\/2019-lifestyle-burnout-depression-6011056?faf=1#1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">44 percent<\/a> of the 15,000 physicians polled experience burnout. On top of that, a number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28481850\">studies<\/a> have confirmed the epidemic\u2019s prevalence among medical professionals. Consider adopting some of these tips to avoid burnout for good.\n\n1. Reset your mind and body by taking regular breaks throughout the day. Research shows that doing so can:\n<ul>\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1177\/2165079916653416\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">boost productivity<\/a><\/li>\n \t<li>spark creativity<\/li>\n \t<li>offset aches and pains<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n2. Resist increasing your workload if you\u2019re already overwhelmed.\n\n3. Establish boundaries for addressing work matters, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/inbox-zero-method\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">such as emails<\/a>, after office hours.
