My morning meditations are usually silent, while at night I use a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/best-meditation-apps\/\">meditation app<\/a> like <a href=\"https:\/\/insighttimer.com\/\">Insight Timer<\/a>. However, you don\u2019t need any prior meditation experience to attend a Vipassana retreat.\r\n<h3>What is Vipassana, exactly?<\/h3>\r\nVipassana means \u201cto see things as they really are.\u201d It\u2019s a style of meditation organized by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhamma.org\/en-US\/index\">Dhamma<\/a> organization, which runs silent meditation retreats all over the world. The main idea is to unlearn established habits and thought patterns so you can develop entirely new techniques for living and experiencing the world.\r\n<h3>So, tell us all the rules.<\/h3>\r\nComplete silence is the most prominent rule. Of course that encompasses no talking, but also no eye contact and no communication through body language. You\u2019re also not allowed to read or write. The idea is that you won\u2019t process your thoughts or experiences, but rather let them release. Next, you can&#8217;t exercise since they want you to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/breathing-exercises\/\">focus on your breath<\/a>. You can go on some short walks, but you sit for the majority of the time.\r\n\r\n<img data-dominant-color=\"705f51\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #705f51;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-13827 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Tea-Meditation-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition-770x484.jpg\" alt=\"Herbal Tea on SIlent Meditation Retreat | The Wellnest by HUM Nutrition\" width=\"770\" height=\"484\" \/>\r\n<h3>Can you describe A Typical Day?<\/h3>\r\nA typical day at Vipassana is pretty intense, and each day is the same. Overall, you sit and meditate for 11 hours a day, and you eat two meals at 6:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Yes\u201411 a.m. is the last mealtime, but you can also have tea or fruit around five p.m. There\u2019s also a teacher\u2019s discourse around six or seven at night, which was probably my favorite part of the day because you finally get to hear something.\r\n<h3>Do you have To Sit Still The Whole Time?<\/h3>\r\nIn the meditation hall, you gather with about 70 other people (half women, half men). You can use any props you want\u2014like cushions, pillows, and blankets\u2014to get comfortable and settle in. You can change your posture throughout the first three days. Afterward, they teach you that the style of Vipassana is to sit in one position for a full hour without moving. The intention is to scan your body for physical sensations and simply observe them.\r\n<h3>Do they feed you, at leasT?<\/h3>\r\nI thought the food was actually really good! Everything is vegetarian. It\u2019s not a hard transition, especially if you already follow a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/30-plants-per-week\/\">plant-based diet<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/low-fodmap-breakfast-recipes\/\">Breakfast<\/a> was consistent and simple: oatmeal, fruit, and a variety of breads, butters, jams, and tea. For the second meal, there\u2019s a rotating menu of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-do-we-need-protein\/\">protein<\/a> and veggies, plus a basic salad bar.\r\n<h3>What was the biggest challenge?<\/h3>\r\nSurprisingly, staying silent was easy and actually pretty relaxing. The hardest part was the lack of activity. You sit for 11 hours a day without any distractions; I really craved some kind of stimulation. Wanting to read and write, I ended up reading my toothpaste and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/hair-care-ingredients\/\">shampoo labels<\/a> over and over. I also missed exercising, which is a big part of my life. Really sitting there with your thoughts\u2014confronting everything that comes up when you\u2019re usually too distracted to face it head on\u2014was very difficult.\r\n\r\n<img data-dominant-color=\"7c7040\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #7c7040;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13754 aligncenter not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Walking-Path-Silent-Meditation-Retreat-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition-770x513.jpg\" alt=\"Walking Path - Silent Meditation Retreat - The Wellnest by HUM Nutrition.jpg\" width=\"770\" height=\"513\" \/>\r\n<h3>What was your favorite part?<\/h3>\r\nI liked the short walking path you can go on during breaks. Since you become accustomed to the silence and lack of stimulation during meditation, you begin to notice the smallest details: the colors and patterns of flowers, every insect, every noise\u2026 I never imagined I\u2019d become so in tune with nature, but I grew to appreciate all of the little details.\r\n<h3>Was there anything that surprised you?<\/h3>\r\nEven though you can\u2019t talk or make eye contact, you still somehow manage to make friends. There are certain people you\u2019re drawn to sit with, and you can pick up on subtle energies in their movements. It\u2019s hard to explain. But you spend 13 hours a day together for 10 days in such an intimate setting, which amounts to a lot of quality time.\r\n<h3>was it a trip coming back home?<\/h3>\r\nSpoiler alert: They don\u2019t tell you ahead of time, but you can talk on the last day. It kind of absorbed the shock before acclimating back into the real world. But still, going home was definitely interesting; it felt strange to drive, touch my phone, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/blue-light\/\">look at screens<\/a>. Also, it was jarring at first to hear people talk.\r\n<h3>Tell us your biggest takeaway from the experience.<\/h3>\r\nI learned that situations and emotions\u2014whether good or bad\u2014are only temporary and that everything passes. Also, I finished the retreat with an overwhelming amount of appreciation and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/practice-gratitude\/\">gratitude<\/a> for life.\r\n<h3>Finally, what\u2019s your advice for anyone considering a silent meditation retreat?<\/h3>\r\nJust do it! Sign up and go. Ten days is a lot of time to completely get off the grid, and there\u2019s usually no good way to plan for it.
