Some of us\u2014myself included\u2014may choose hair products largely based on marketing ploys and pretty branding. However, some ingredients therein can be potentially harmful not only to your hair, but also to your health. Sulfates<\/h3>\r\nSulfates are strong detergents that produce foam and lather, which make us think that they&#8217;re putting in good work to fully cleanse our hair. On the contrary, sulfates are surfactants that bind to sebum on the scalp, damaging follicles and stripping away natural oils as the suds pile up.\r\n\r\nIn addition to drying out hair and fading color, sulfates are potentially carcinogenic, can cause and exacerbate <a href=\"https:\/\/toxnet.nlm.nih.gov\/cgi-bin\/sis\/search\/a?dbs+hsdb:@term+@DOCNO+1315\">eczema<\/a>, and can have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4458934\/\">toxic effects on the skin, eyes, mouth, and lungs<\/a>. Sulfates go by several different names, including sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES).\r\n<h3>2. Parabens<\/h3>\r\nParabens are harmful preservatives added to hair care products to abate bacterial growth.\r\n\r\nWhile this additive sounds beneficial, parabens are actually known <a href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/health\/scientific_committees\/consumer_safety\/docs\/sccs_o_132.pdf\">endocrine disruptors<\/a>. Studies find that they mimic estrogen, thus spurring the growth of breast cancer cells.\r\n\r\nUnfortunately, many personal care products (including lotions, deodorants, and toothpaste) and even grocery items contain traces of parabens. It&#8217;s definitely worth investigating your labels for a paraben-free indication.\r\n<h3>3. Formaldehyde<\/h3>\r\nFormaldehyde is another preservative you&#8217;ll certainly want to steer clear of.\r\n\r\nNot only does it absorb into the skin, leading to allergic reactions; it&#8217;s also a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.safecosmetics.org\/get-the-facts\/chemicals-of-concern\/formaldehyde\/\">proven carcinogen<\/a>. Additionally, formaldehyde is perhaps best known as a prime ingredient in embalming fluid. (While HBO&#8217;s <em>Six Feet Under<\/em> may be my favorite show of all time, I&#8217;m not morbid enough to find this connection appealing.)\r\n\r\nWhen reading hair care ingredients, look out for formaldehyde&#8217;s aliases, including quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, diazolidinyl urea, and imidazolidinyl urea.\r\n<h3>4. Phthalates<\/h3>\r\nAdd phthalates to the list of toxic hair care ingredients. (Shampoos and hairsprays aside, they increase the softness and flexibility of plastic and vinyl products.)\r\n\r\nThe most common phthalate, di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), is an <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200925195108\/https:\/\/toxtown.nlm.nih.gov\/chemicals-and-contaminants\/phthalates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">endocrine disruptor<\/a>. More research is needed to further hone in on the negative effects of phthalates on humans. However, studies on animals have shown that these chemicals had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/biomonitoring\/Phthalates_FactSheet.html\">adverse effects<\/a> on their kidneys, livers, lungs, and reproductive systems.\r\n\r\nUnfortunately, phthalates can lurk in your hair care and cosmetic products under the general ingredient of &#8220;fragrance.&#8221; To err on the side of caution, opt for products labeled as both phthalate- and fragrance-free.\r\n<h3>5. Silicone<\/h3>\r\nWhile silicone isn&#8217;t necessarily as scary as some other hair care ingredients, it&#8217;s still a no-go for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/6-nutrition-secrets-to-your-dream-hair\/\">healthy hair<\/a>. While silicone boosts shine, it&#8217;s merely superficial: It simultaneously dries out your hair and disallows moisture from penetrating the shaft.\r\n\r\nSilicone can lead to buildup, frizz, and breakage, which can compromise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/hair-growth-cycle\/\">hair growth<\/a>.
