The Best Skincare Acids For Every Skin Type

Don’t be afraid of these helpful skincare acids!

Acid may sound intimidating  to put on your face but chances are you’ll find one form or another in most of your favorite products. Today, we’re breaking down the best skincare acids to look for to support every type of skin concern.

For Dull Skin: Glycolic Acid

Glycolic acid is part of the alpha hydroxy acid family often referred to in shorthand as AHA. These acids are naturally available in citrus fruits and help to loosen and release dead skin cells from the surface, revealing softer, smoother skin beneath. It can also enhance the skin’s ability to retain moisture for an all around improved glow after using.

Try incorporating a resurfacing product with glycolic acid as a key ingredient to your nighttime routine. Removing the day’s dead skin cells will ensure you wake up with fresh, rejuvenated skin. We love Bliss’s That’s Incredi-peel, with 10% glycolic acid, as a convenient single-step, spa-strength option you can use at home. No rinsing required! You just put it on before before bed for brighter, smoother by morning – even after just one use.

For Sensitive Skin: Lactic Acid

Another one from the AHA family for optimum cell turnover! However, lactic acid is the gentler option for those with sensitive skin. Besides offering mild exfoliation, it can also help encourage collagen production and reduce hyperpigmentation. Still, if your skin is very, very sensitive, look for a lower concentration in your skincare prodcuts and/or limit your use to only once or twice per week.

For Acne: Salicylic Acid

Getting acquainted with salicylic acid is a rite of passage most teenagers go through dealing with acne for the first time. Anyone who has been through this knows it well as a key ingredient in acne clearing face washes and spot treatments. Why? Similar to acids above, it exfoliates skin by loosening things up on the surface but it also penetrates further. Salicyclic acid can also reduce sebum secretion to dry things out and is an anti-inflammatory to bring down redness. One thing to know is that it is most helpful when dealing with whiteheads and blackheads as opposed to cystic or hormonal acne.

For Dry Skin: Hyaluronic Acid

We’re quite partial to this acid in particular at HUM. It’s the star ingredient in our delicious Glow Sweet Glow gummies which support skin hydration. Here’s a fun fact that will explain why: hyaluronic acid holds 1,000 times its weight in water! Although naturally occurring in our bodies, its sensitive to free radicals. So, if you find your skin on the dry side, try incorporating our hyaluronic acid gummies into your supplement routine as well as a hyaluronic acid serum beneath your daily moisturizer. (See our in-depth article about the benefits of hyaluronic acid in its own article here.)

For Anti-Aging: Ferulic Acid

This potent plant-based antioxidant helps to protect against aging free radical damage to the skin. That means it’s a must for urban living or anyone with lots of exposure to the sun. In fact, research suggests it can enhance the stability of other antioxidants such as Vitamin C and Vitamin E – and even boost the protective effects of your SPF!

For Uneven Skin & Dark Spots: Kojic Acid

Our skin gets its pigment from a pigment called melanin. Kojic acid is an interesting little ingredient commonly taken from mushrooms. It has the fascinating ability to prevent melanin from forming. For that reason, it’s becoming increasingly popular in skincare products to help even skin tone and even diminish the appearance of dark spots. Look for it in serums and moisturizers.
